257 Belleville tower | 8-storeys | Residential

Return to the Construction Projects list.

This proposal is in its second design incarnation after the original 12-storey triangle-design was canceled in 2008.  The new proposal, an 8-storey stepped down structure designed by a new architectural team that includes ex-Victoria mayor Alan Lowe, has more likelihood of receiving municipal approval.

Poor Cathy, it would seem she doesn't get out much if she holds the Admiral Inn in such high esteem. I suspect even a fleeting glimpse of the Taj Mahal or the Eiffel Tower might be too much for her.

I also would of preferred the pyramid type building on that location. It would of a least given some interest to our skyline, which is basically a large rectangle when you look at it from the harbour.

Really what's wrong with something with a crown, or heaven forbid, something that does NOT have a flat room as a finish?

I question the old inn's "beauty" but still I have fond memories of the motels we visited when I was a kid on holiday with my family. I doubt the cheap motel across the street from Disneyland in 1976 is still there. I lament the sad sight of the boarded up Crystal Court motel and the loss of economy accomodations just steps from one of the world's great urban harbours.

But what made that harbour great was not sheepishly understated buildings, it was bold, grand architectural statements.

^^ I have to agree. There is absolutely now "beauty", to that hotel at all. We seem to have a love afair with recreating that type of building all over town. Looks way to much like the new townhomes at the corner of Lamps and ESQ Rd, the current ones being built across the street from the Legion, and other SFD to MFD quick infill projects all over the city (seems if you don't want to offend a council, just use the Admirals Inn as a template for your infill project). To make it even less offensive remove all ornamentation.

I think the pyramid building would be fantastic … Oh! Couldn’t have that in Victoria … remember, tourists don’t come here to look at the buildings … … groan.

When I look across the harbour at that area ... all I see is empty space ...
