The Hudson Place project encompasses the entire Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) department store property between Douglas, Blanshard, Fisgard and Herald streets in downtown Victoria.  The first phase of the project, dubbed The Hudson, is the renovation and alteration of the department store itself, which includes cutting a light well into the slab of each floor above the main floor, and an addition of two floors to the top of the building.  Just over 150 units will be created in the 1920’s structure featuring high loft ceilings and unique living spaces afforded through adaptation of a department store into a residential building.

Ground floor retail space is earmarked for a grocery store as an anchor tenant, with smaller retail outlets expected along the east side of the building which will face an alleyway linking the remainder of the development which includes several residential towers up to 24-storeys with office and commercial space planned for their podiums.  The second phase of the project will be a 12-storey mixed-use tower with a subsidized rental component, dubbed The Hudson Mews.

Construction on The Hudson stalled after the Christmas break in 2008.  Work resumed in August 2009 once the entire Hudson property between Douglas and Blanshard was subdivided in an effort to appease financiers.
