And that right there is why Symphony Splash is more about exposing people to the symphony than about collecting donations.

Well, they are asking for $5 a head again this year, we'll see I guess.

OK it's this weekend.
However will the inner harbour handle such a crowd without the amphitheatre and green space that the future Ship Point will supply?

It drives me crazy how cheap locals can be.
...Kathryn Laurin, the orchestra’s CEO, says...about 40,000 people are expected at the Symphony Splash...[she] declined to disclose the event’s budget, other than saying it’s a “six-figure” price tag. Generated revenue doesn’t come close to meeting its costs...

40,000 people can't cough up $5 a piece to help cover costs of this event? That's $20 for a family of four. Where else could this level of entertainment be had for such a nominal fee?

If this event is about funding, then put up a perimeter and charge for entry. Otherwise just let it go, already.

I dunno, cities around the world celebrate with these sorts of events without ever asking for handouts. There should be enough money at the municipal level to cover the costs of such events, precisely so we don't have to feel like attending a civic gathering is just another opportunity for an organization to ask for money or lament not collecting enough money. And I don't mean just the CoV should fund this, but the entire 13.
If this event is about funding, then put up a perimeter and charge for entry. Otherwise just let it go, already.
The big cost for events like this is security and the installation of all the temporary cameras, and it will be those costs that will escalate to the point where the Commonwealth Games will be way up there by the time the date rolls around.

$5 per person. $15 for grandstand. $25 for lower causeway, which should all be a beer/wine optional area.
And multi-purpose this thing. While you have a barge and PA there all day, let's allow some other bands to do 45 minute sets all day starting at 10am.

People seem to be willing to shell out a few bucks for those silly glowsticks (that will just get thrown away); surely they could forego these in exchange for a small entry fee.

Or, just use the facial recognition features on the cameras and cross reference that with the ICBC database to mail everyone who attends a bill.

If they announce that plan everyone will show up with dark glasses and a hoodie. Mind you my drivers licence photo doesn't even look like me.

Perfect for the local cheapskates who also suffer from agoraphobia.
Seriously though, I do think this is nice for those who would like to attend in person, but for whatever reason cannot. Hopefully a few of the @ home viewers will donate to the Symphony as well.
