So it's sounds like another roller-coaster style like the Falls.

I wish I could remember the proposed height on the development application a couple of years ago because i'm pretty sure it was going to be Victoria's tallest, although an 18 story building there would still be great.

I guess they don't do mosaics like they used to. Tiles have been falling off for some time and I see that they now have a tarp up. Wondering if there is a plan to fix the mosaic or if they are just going to keep the tarp up...

Maybe it's just me but I have always found this mosaic somewhat aesthetically unpleasing. I'd be OK if they decided to tear the whole thing off and leave the wall blank. Perhaps a painted mural on this wall might be a better homage to Hokasai's "The Great Wave"

I really like the idea of having a mosaic on the side of the building, but I don't think it was successful as implemented because of the way they stretched it vertically. I assume they stretched it on purpose because they figured it wouldn't look right in its actual proportions when viewed from the ground (a whopping 13 stories below)? If so, it was a silly notion. If the building had been four times as tall as it is it still would have been a silly notion. Anyway, most people who see the mosaic probably see it from a block or more further east on Yates, so there wasn't any need to distort it the way they did. If the distortion was indeed deliberate.

If they stretched it because the final building ended up giving them less width to work with than originally planned or some such thing, then I think they could have chopped it up to decent effect, like so:

That looks better than the squished version that got stuck up there.

What's this building's connection to Japanese art again anyway?

I personally liked the mosaic as it was. I just wish it had been better put on.

You liked the way it was squished?

I don't think if you're going to use art like that that you should be resizing it incorrectly.

^ Why? I don't think they were trying to reproduce it exactly. It recalled the original work and everyone knew which piece of art it recalled. I would rather see an original take on a piece than a copy.

That would make a perfect image for the side of the Jack Davis building, one of our city's beloved fatscrapers.

Except what they did wasn't an "original take", it was cropped and squished:

I disagree it was a pixelated version not an attempt to recreate.

Something seems to be wrong with "the wave" on The Wave. Tiles falling off in the wind?

Today:

Many of the tiles had fallen off. I'd hate to think what would happen if you were hit by a eight inch tile falling at terminal velocity.

Christ, the Hartnell's tiles on all their buildings have lasted 50 years, these fall off in less than 6. This is what happens when you don't use horse-glue anymore.

I would assume that the exterior facade and any ornamental elements are covered by the warranty, yes?

Know it all.
