Parkside in saanich has central heating. Place needs so much work the CMHC won’t insure mortgages there.

Is that an apartment with central heating, or townhouses with their own central heating?
I’ve heard of lenders & insurers being uncomfortable because of oil tanks & furnaces. Is that what’s happening there?

Condos and townhouses, each building has its own boiler room.

Myriad of issues with insurance, asphalt repairs, drainage, boilers. It was certainly no problem finding a buyer in 2020.

Those boiler systems can be pretty efficient (and comfy if it’s in-floor heat) but good luck finding someone who wants to work on them.

I have in floor heat in my basement, it's terrific, never had a problem with it.

Is it gas/oil fueled hydronic, or simple electric?

I’d go electric for infloor heating simply because those hydronic systems have a lifespan, and repair/replacement is never cheap or easy. The electric ones don’t really fail, and if you ever want to abandon it you can just kill the circuit and nobody’s the wiser.

I worked on a big waterfront house recently that was vacant during the cold snap, and the in floor hydronic loops burst - oops. Big expensive problem to fix.

Only problem with it for electric imo is the cost to install and maybe efficiency. I have my kitchen and a bathroom done like that, tile on top.
It’s probably the quietest way to heat!

Gas boiler, never had a problem, all the bathrooms have electric in floor heat.

The US could soon become a world leader in rare earth minerals after over two billion metric tons were found in Wyoming.

The discovery could mean America taking over China, whose supplies stand at 44 million metric tons.

According to American Rare Earths Inc, the discovery 'exceeded [their] wildest dreams' having only drilled around a quarter of the project.

Rare Earths Discovery Near Wheatland So Big It Could Be World Leader

American Rare Earths Inc. disclosed in a technical report on Wednesday that it found 64% more rare earth minerals than it had originally envisioned. “This exceeded our wildest dreams,” CEO Donald Swartz told Cowboy State Daily.

The US could soon surpass China as the world leader in rare earth minerals after more than 2.34 billion metric tons were discovered in Wyoming.

American Rare Earths Inc announced that the reserves near Wheatland dramatically surpass the Asian nation’s 44 million metric tons, saying it 'exceeded our wildest dreams’ after drilling only about 25 percent of the property.

The company has a stake in 367 mining claims across 6,320 acres of land in the Halleck Creek Project, along with four Wyoming mineral leases on 1,844 acres on the same project now called Cowboy State Mine.

When it comes to fighting climate change, every bit counts. At least, that was the thinking behind a small test project in summer 2023 at a metro station in Paris, the city where the world’s first legally binding climate accord was signed.

Commuters who went through turnstiles at the Miromesnil station in central Paris powered mini turbines, converting kinetic energy into electricity. During the two-day pilot project, 27,000 people crossed six turnstiles – a tiny fraction of the more than 1.5 billion passengers who use the French capital’s metro system annually.

The energy produced was minuscule, but if installed across the city’s metro network, these turbines could produce 136 megawatts a year, saving 30,000 tonnes of CO2, according to Iberdrola, the Spanish energy company in charge of the project.

Malahat Nation partners to build Canada’s biggest battery factory

The Indigenous-led project breaks ground in less than 90 days and will create over 100 local jobs

https://www.vicnews....factory-7320784

The Malahat Nation is now less than 90 days away from having shovels in the ground on what will be Canada’s first Indigenous-led gigafactory and the largest battery plant in the country.

________

The new 100,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility will specialize in assembling lithium iron phosphate battery packs for residential, commercial, and industrial storage applications, which will pave the way for grid-scale battery storage systems while contributing to grid resilience, and sustainability. Gunning says they will be bringing in two different types of battery cells — a cylindrical, and a blade which will be assembled into packs at the new plant. The packs will range from 5 kW up to 100 kW and will be deployed in different applications that will include home batteries and energy storage for both large-scale solar and wind projects. This will be Canada’s largest battery plant and Gunning says for the project to reach its peak capacity, the cost will exceed $100 million.

Hydrogen Straight from the Earth

White hydrogen, naturally occurring and renewed within the earth's surface, offers a renewable and potentially abundant source of clean energy for various applications.

Recent discoveries of white hydrogen deposits in countries like France, Spain, and Canada have sparked interest in its extraction and utilization as a low-cost and environmentally friendly energy source.

Despite its potential benefits, concerns persist regarding the environmental impact of hydrogen leaks and the need for further research to ensure sustainable development and utilization of white hydrogen resources.

Dr Michael Webber, a professor in energy resources at the University of Texas stated, “The earth has many locations where the right conditions co-exist to naturally produce and accumulate hydrogen, which can then be extracted for societal use.” He explained, “The good news is that by letting the earth do the work for us, this source of hydrogen is likely much cleaner to produce than current methods of gasifying coal, reforming methane, or electrolysing water.”

Jordan Solar and Energy Storage Public comment period coming soon on initial project description

The public will be invited to participate in an upcoming public comment period for the Jordan Solar & Energy Storage project. Jordan BC Solar Project Limited Partnership has proposed to build a solar power generation plant that would produce up to 100 megawatts of renewable energy, 40 kilometres northwest of Sooke, B.C.

The public comment period is open from February 15 to March 18, 2024, at midnight PDT.

An in-person public open house will be held February 29, 2024, at the Sooke Community Hall (2037 Shields Rd., Sooke, V9Z 1A5) from 4:00 – 7:00 PM PDT.

A virtual information session will be held online March 7, 2024, from 4:30-6:00 PM PDT

The initial project description, which the Environmental Assessment Office is seeking comments on, describes major components of the project, where they will be located, and potential impacts on the surrounding environment and existing human activities.

The Environmental Assessment Office is looking for input to help identify key interests, issues and concerns of First Nations, stakeholders and the public. This input helps inform the proponent’s more detailed project design, including the location of project infrastructure and alternative approaches to the project to address any concerns identified.
