Tall Ship Festival starts today! - Just spent the last couple hours watching the ships sailing around just off Dallas Rd, got some awesome shots from the crane. Official kick off of the Festival is at 3pm today with the Naden band

This is already turning out to be a fiasco - the land 'party' on Thursday evening was cancelled as Vic Police were not notified for traffic control and security. Today the ships were to open at 9:30 AM, yet the steps to the Bounty were still being built at 11 AM (they had 24 hours to get that done). People are getting confused over line-ups...the list goes on.

The Tall Ships Festival is a great idea, but even with the historical problems here and in Vancouver, why do we keep putting this into the hands of 'volunteers' and not a pro management company - $35 to stand in line in this heat for nadda?

If you think you could do a better job of running this, here's your chance:

Victoria Tall Ships Society Executive Director

The Executive Director will be responsible for providing the necessary support for planning and implementing all the programmes and activities for the Tall Ships Festival in 2011. This is a contract position with a competitive monetary package. Qualified applicants are invited to forward their resume, in confidence, by January 30, 2010 to: Victoria Tall Ships Society c/o Maritime Museum of British Columbia 28 Bastion Square Victoria, BC V8W 1H9 www.tallshipsvictoria.ca 574154

"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

The event in Port Alberni was seamless. I would travel there again over risking Victoria's showing.

The Victoria Tall Ships Society staged festivals in 2005 and 2008, but was unable to raise sufficient funds to mount a followup event that matched the standards of the first two, said president David Winkler.

Faced with that reality, the board, which formed in 2003, passed a motion Nov. 3 to dissolve the society.

Once bills get paid, any remaining assets will be distributed evenly between Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS) and the Maritime Museum of B.C.

Ah bummer. I remember enjoying the sight of the ships parading into the harbour in 2008. Was hoping we'd get another similar event.

That's too bad; I worked for one of the primary sponsors of the hugely successful 2005 Tall Ships (Coast Capital) and remember it being a blast. Huge crowds turned up. Our IT group set up a large CCS tent primarily for kids, networked up a bunch of laser printers and took digital photos of the children, some made up in pirate makeup which we had staff process and send off to the printers. By the time the kids were done with the picture-taking and removing the pirate paraphernalia they were able to pick up their finished glossy photos. Great success and tons of fun. Kind of a shame to see they were unable to maintain the momentum. I can well imagine the cost of running the festival though....must've been very steep.
