Political ideals are always about missing the big picture...

Also, did the cycling advocates really believe the governments were so keen about cycling initiatives because they were so darned determined to do people a great big favour? Surely the cycling advocates weren't that clueless about the viper's nest they were getting themselves into? If the governments are patting you on the back today then it's guaranteed (every single time) that they'll be punching you in the face tomorrow. The only reason they provided you with that "free" rug was so they could pull it out from under you later on.

I mean... what year is it again? Come on. When will people wake up?

Is your suggestion that the City built bike lanes, only to later create a free bike valet and then later ask for a small subsidy to help pay for parking bikes?  This is how devious the City is thinking?  You think the plan was to make revenue?  Sorry if I'm misunderstanding the plan.

So most mornings on my walk to work through the mid-block sidewalk from Cormorant to Pandora, I'll see cyclists roll off the bike lane on Pandora and the majority don't get off their bikes and slowly roll through to the bike room on the back of the Jawl building there.  It doesn't bother me too much typically.  This morning, there were a few more pedestrians in the walkway and two cyclists were rolling through, it was quite congested.  I comments to the riders "C'mon boys, get off your bikes." as one kind of stumbled a bit trying to avoid.  They didn't say anything, maybe I didn't hear them.  For the most part I down play cyclists on sidewalks as there is enough room and I find most go slow enough it's easy to avoid.  This one bugged me tough, likely the cyclist would've been injured more than me if we bumped (there are stairs right there), I understand they have their little bike shoes on but please dismount.  Getting to that age, I may get bothered a little more by the small things.  We will see how tomorrow goes lol.

New bike lanes are coming to Blanshard between Fort and Caledonia. There will also be left left turning lanes for traffic. I suspect Blanshard will be going down to one through lane in each direction, unless parking is removed from the street full time?

Ismo, any idea?

If that stretch of Blanshard ever gets fully built-out with residential buildings and otherwise transformed into a high-density downtown neighbourhood then I don't know if I'd have all that much of a problem with bike lanes along there, especially along the wider blocks portions of Blanshard. But considering the fact that it's the year 2024 and we're supposed to be mired in housing/rental crisis 7.0 and yet there are still several prime properties doing next to nothing... I'm actually starting to wonder if it will ever happen. Suffice it to say: I'm still not much of a fan of the cart-before-the-horse approach to things.

The CoV has ensured it will never happen since they intend to turn at least one side of one block into a park.

Ok, that's not so bad.

Today on McKenzie, the road is so tight now between Blenkinsop and Quadra that a bus nearly smoked my sideview mirror navigating the turn south of Blenkinsop. Crazy how tight it is there.

I think/hope it makes that part of Blanchard more pleasant to walk along, not so nice to be walking so close to fast moving cars

I agree. It's an awful street from a pedestrian perspective.

Council approved a five-year implementation strategy for the nine cycling facilities prioritized in the 2023 Oak Bay Active Transportation Strategy Review to be funded through taxes. That translates to a 1.15-per-cent tax increase for 2024 and starts with hiring two full-time active transportation coordinators.

Two full time active transportation coordinators. At a time where kids have never used less active transportation. At a time that less and less Oak Bay residents cycle.

Quite the feat, right?

On Tuesday I had to do some driving and encountered a whole bunch of the “curb-plunk” bike lanes. Maybe 10km of travel, mid-day, beautiful weather. I counted 4 bicycles. Major traffic congestion and disruptions from the road diets, however, and some close calls due to much thinner lanes.

These social engineers think they can literally will their way into peopemchanging their habots (walking, driving, riding etc.).  It's NOT going to happen.  Ever see any youth or teenager riding a bike these days?  It's not a growing thing.  And it follows if youth and teens are not riding, ridership is not going to grow.

About the Network

The City is building a 33km priority network of All Ages and Abilities (AAA) cycling infrastructure to improve road safety and provide affordable transportation options for residents. Our goal is to provide safe, comfortable connections for people who want to ride more often or who are concerned about safety to access schools, parks, community centres, regional trails, and destinations throughout our community. The Cycling Network plan was adopted in 2016.

Yeah, they all come here when it’s sunny, where there is even less bike infrastructure and basically zero public infrastructure. Kids, eh?IMG_5838.jpeg

SSI has gotta be one of the least bike friendly places in the CRD. Terrible potholes and bumps, narrow highways, no lines painted, no shoulder most places, no room for bike lanes, let alone bikes, twisty corners, and those laid back islanders sure know how to find the gas when they’re trying to catch the ferry.

I really can’t understand the appeal of cycling on SSI. Seems like a great way to have a near death experience imo.

Yes, it’s awful and I don’t know why people promote it. I spent about seven years cycling from Tillicum to the oak bay marina, not much in the way of bike lanes back then so mostly just in traffic and that felt very safe. Cycling here? No way. I tried.
