I still think we might get a T&T at Chard's Douglas & Caledonia project.

I think that market will struggle to support one Asian grocery store.

Asian grocer H Mart to lease recently vacated Toys R Us space at Victoria's Mayfair Shopping Centre

Excellent news!

I think the store will do just fine. It will really hurt Fariways and Chinatown grocers the most..

H Mart appears to be Korean focused. It may have a different product mix than a T&T.

This is very exciting!  H Mart definitely has a different product mix, with some overlap.  I believe it's similar to T&T in that they usually have hot food options as well, and a bakery.

That's right; I've been to a couple H Marts in the lower mainland, and although there is a korean focus, they sell pretty much everything for all asian cuisines.

I think this will be tough competition for the Quadra Fairways and the markets in Chinatown for sure... I'm okay with this.

Mayfair Shopping Centre in Victoria is promising four days of rides, treats and games for the whole family when its Spring Fair returns this Thursday.

The fair, happening April 27-30, will envelop the mall’s parking lot at the corner of Finlayson and Blanshard streets, where West Coast Amusements will set up various rides — including kiddie land, major and spectacular rides — to accommodate thrill seekers of all ages.

Every time I drive down Blanshard I am reminded how badly the mall and the strip mall adjacent really need their exteriors power washed. That “Woodward’s” logo is still visible…

That’s a heritage mildew stain now.

I was at Mayfair last week on a Thursday evening. The mall was open, but The Bay was closed. I’ve never seen that before.

^ Usually a mall stipulates that all tenants have to be open during published mall hours, but since covid I have been seeing lots of exceptions to this across the region.

Right. Odd for an anchor to just shut down. It was early, about 6PM that they were closing. We went there after picking up Mrs. Mike K. after work, so it wasn’t like it was 8:30 or something like that.

The Bay website says that store closes at 9pm Thursdays. Maybe they were just too short of staff.

Doubt it this has been the case for several weeks now so suspect it has nothing to do with staffing; perhaps the Bay has worked out a new arrangement with mall ownership to close earlier. Night-time pedestrian traffic is quite low there compared to historic norms so perhaps it simply is no longer viable for a larger operation like the Bay to remain open the longer hours. Mayfair didn't even open late for "Christmas hours" until mid-December. Years ago "late" holiday hours at Mayfair typically started on or around Dec 1.

I'm not sure how much longer Hudson's Bay will be in business. On the few occasions when I visit anymore, both the downtown and Mayfair stores feel like ghost towns.

Oh yeah last time I was at Bay Center DT I think staff outnumbered customers by 3 or 4:1. Was very strange.
