I could see if the house was concrete or some modern or brutalist design that matched the landscaping, but the house its self can't seem to decide what style of materials its going for, let alone the landscaping.

Ya, I think the choice of white vinyl windows was also poor, at least for my taste.

Why.  Why.  Why?  Now I suppose they are waiting for some flora growth in the beds, but really, why the concrete backyard?  No growth is coming up from the grass adjacent to the concrete.  Are those wall, on either side of both staircases ever going to look good?  I think they will have weedwacker green grass stains on them at about 4" up all summer, and water marks all winter from the top, and black mould from the bottom always coming up..

If they can afford to install $15k worth of built-in Miele appliances, they can afford the upkeep on some cement walls.

I'm not sure though. Why are maintain some ugly plain concrete walls? Make them better to start.

This is something that has always bothered me.  Look how beautiful this house is.  But look how freaking UGLY that wall is.

What gives?

The best way to hide an ugly wall like that is with an old 50 foot ferro cement boat you would like to restore.

And I guess we can conclude that being a builder in Victoria is very profitable despite claims otherwise...

It is like any other business, a select few do well, the rest not so much.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of success. I just get irritated when the statements get thrown around that there is not profit in the business. Of course there isn't. The money is taken out of the business leaving little behind...

Most of the money is in custom homes and huge spec volume.  You don't see Knight Construction, Huxley, Christopher Developments, Johal Developments, etc., building too many spec homes.  Abstract has done a few spec home but it seems they are moving away from that into condominium projects such as http://www.villagewalkvictoria.com/ and http://elementresidences.ca/

For custom homes you need reputation behind your name which not many people have and spec volume requires a huge amount of capital and risk tolerance which not many people have either.

A builder building a couple of run of the mill spec homes is not living in the Uplands, for the most part.  All the guys living the Uplands are pretty big players, Huxley, Johal, and I think the Limona owner has an approx. $5 mill home in the Uplands.

It's much like real estate, there is solid money in it for sure, if you are in in the top 1% of the realtors, so 12 out of 1200 can likely afford the live in the Uplands, the other 1188 not so much.

surrounded by farmland and with a population of under 10,000 people, the Norwegian town of Brumunddal might seem like an unlikely setting for a record-breaking high-rise.

But soaring above the neighboring Mjøsa lake, more than 100 kilometers north of Oslo, the 280-foot-tall Mjøstårnet tower became the world's tallest timber building when it opened last year.
The 18-story structure contains apartments, office space and the aptly-named Wood Hotel. And beyond putting a small town on the world map, it has added to a growing body of evidence that timber can provide a sustainable alternative to concrete and steel.

12 homeowners in winnipeg that previously just had traditional woodframe construction now have a light concrete on some of their floors.

Fraser Jack's living room armchair is now cemented to his floor, along with his vacuum.

He's one of several homeowners in the north Winnipeg Scotia Heights area dealing with the aftermath of a sewer backup of wet concrete and looking for answers from the city.

Jack was working out of town on Saturday when the incident happened. His father phoned him with the news, after checking on his home.

"It essentially came out of the toilet, spewing out of there," Jack said. "It also filled up all the drain pipes, filling a quarter of my tub."
