It's exit strategy for 99.999% of businesses.

if you want to exit it is. The question is what do you do with all the cash? If you love to make beer, sitting on a corner in winslow arizona doesnt seem too inspiring and if you love beer, and the reason you started was to make something better than the swill the big guys make, then selling to them gets you in bed with the devil. I interviewed Matt Phillips for one of our very early Growler Hour's and brewing is in his DNA.

Now that Phillips is experiencing increasing popularity across Canada, I bet Labatt's is keeping a close eye on them, too. But I would be very surprised if any local brewery sold out to a mega-brewery.

A few local breweries have tried to sell out to no avail.

holy moly it looks like bc is going to get 28 new breweries in 2016, including 6 on the island. that would make 140 in total:

Here's an interesting find I spotted at Kilshaw's Auction this week. A mostly intact case of Guinness Export Stout from 1952--that's sealed bottles 64 years old!

The box is stencilled Victoria BC. so this case has been here in the city since it was exported from the UK.

What I like is the old style corrugated box which is more valuable than the beer, which probably has gone skunky.

Some beer snobs I know might say, "could it get any worse?"

Cook Street Liquor has started a new service where they will mail you 12 beers.  To anywhere in the province.

This weeks offering is $120.  Plus $35 shipping.  $155 for 12 650ml beers?    Nearly $13 each?

That's not a service, that's a crime.

I guess if you're rolling in cash in the middle of nowhere, with a taste for good beer, this could save you.  In Port Alberni, a mere 2 hours from here, their beer selection looks like it's 1980.

Don't give HB any ideas, he'll move this chat into the crime thread.

I was surprised to learn the Cook St. liquor store does not sell Budweiser.  Odd.

Good. Poor excuse for a beer.

Sure, it does not suit you, and many others.  But it is the #2 or #3 selling beer in the country.  It's hard to understand why a liquor store would be opposed to moving product.

Ok but like my Port Alberni anecdote, if that's all there is in the store, people buy that.  What should they do, drink water?  That's for kids.

It's quite possible that Bud does NOT sell at a cliquey liquor store so they don't bother to stock it.

Bud is the #5 selling beer at the Foul Bay liquor store. I think it would still move at Cook St.

Taphouse now has Bud and PBR. A month ago they had neither.

Churchill will soon start stocking bottled Bud.

I may or may not have something to do with the above.

Bedford Brewing, well regarded as the best U-brew in the city, is closing. Sad news. Anyone know why?

After 20 years and a heck of a lot of beers, circumstances beyond our control are forcing us to close. We will be brewing up a storm for the next week so call and book your farewell kettles.
Thanks for 2 great decades. We will miss serving you.

when you can fill up a growler for as little as $9 (that's just a bit less than $4.50 per litre), it's no wonder (sadly).   But "circumstances beyond our control" can mean way too many things for anyone to guess.
