Car dealer's practices under investigation by industry body

The dealership lost a $5.5-million lawsuit after the operator of one of its vehicles was involved in a collision that killed one woman and critically injured another

Car dealers routinely lend their vehicles for test drives, a practice covered under insurance provided by the Insurance Corp. of B.C. in the form of demonstration plates temporarily affixed to vehicles.

When the car dealers’ salespeople accompany prospective clients, they are covered by insurance.

Dealers can also lend the vehicles without a salesperson present for 24 to 48 hours. A dealer will ask the driver for their licence and take down credit-card information, in case the driver returns the vehicle with damage.

Multiple car dealers contacted by the Times Colonist said that a loan of nine days is way out of the norm and they could not think of an instance when it would be warranted.

Information presented at the trial indicated the dealership did not place a demonstration plate on the loaned vehicle.

Instead, it removed the licence plate from the prospective purchaser’s vehicle and affixed it to the new vehicle.

The same car dealers said that while such a plate switch is customary after a vehicle has been purchased, it’s not common practice before there is an approved bill of sale.

In the case in question, there was no purchase agreement, as a financial institution could not be found to approve the loan.

The dealers said that the only time they would transfer the plates would be at the time of delivery, with a transfer of ownership and insurance to the next vehicle.

Big Boy’s Toys near Parksville gets an apology and settles defamation lawsuit

Mar. 31, 2024

An out-of-court settlement has been reached resolving a defamation lawsuit involving Big Boy’s Toys near Parksville. The couple behind the lawsuit is speaking publicly for the first time since launching it.

The owners of the RV dealership sued a couple who bought a trailer in September 2022, only to have the couple go on a campaign using multiple social media platforms to claim they were sold a lemon.

All appeared to be fine, but on a trip in the U.S. with their children in tow, Willard and his wife, Lisa Redl, discovered mold.

The couple then started a campaign of complaints, with more than 100 online saying Big Boys Toys sold them a lemon.

“Being called gangsters. That we prey on young families. That we have a history of selling lemons that extends about 20 years,” said Shannon. “It was on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Yelp.”

Willard and Redl agreed to delete all their social media posts about Big Boy’s Toys and replace them with a two-minute recorded apology for no less than a year.

“We improperly lashed out at Big Boy’s Toys Limited and its owners, Ian and Shannon Moore, because we wrongly assumed that they had sold us a lemon,” said Redl in the recorded video.

The Moores say the situation has taken a huge emotional toll on them and their employees.

Looks like Tim and Ford GT's aren't a lucky combo.

A Canadian used car dealership is being accused of misrepresenting a previously crashed 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition, and unsurprisingly, there’s a lawsuit about it

This isn’t the first time Quocksister has been in hot water regarding a Ford GT. Automotive News Canada reports that back in early 2020, Quocksister was an accused party in a lawsuit around flipping a 2018 Ford GT before the two-year ban on resale was up. Ford sought damages of $1 million plus attorney fees from the defendants and aimed to block and rescind the sale of the car in question

Who likes loud cars? Ontario study suggests they skew young, male and score high on psychopathy and sadism

Forget the cars. It’s the motorcycles that are the worst.

Nobody should allow their dads to ride loud bikes. Have a conversation, get them help, make sure they have the resources to work out their feelings. Or better yet, creep into their bedrooms on Saturday mornings and wake them up with a straight pipe recording to the ear.

A lot of motorcyclists believe that louder = safer.

They’re probably not wrong. And it’s probably worth doing, if it results in even the smallest increase in safety. Riding Motorcycles(on the road, with traffic) is super dangerous. I won’t do it anymore (saying this as a 2 wheel fiend who can’t get it out of my blood. But am directing my family toward dirt bikes, where you direct more of your own safety)

That’s been debunked, hasn’t it?

The old timers I know who ride, don’t ride loud bikes. It’s the weekend warriors and wannabe tough guys who ride loud bikes. I just assume anyone on a loud bike gets beat up lots at the office.

^^I believe it's been rebunked.

No, really I'm just going off common sense. Motorcycles are hard to see. If they're easy to hear, it makes you more 'visible', doesn't it? Although I understand loud bikes are annoying, and any debunking effort has probably had an agenda behind it. Maybe I'm wrong though.

People in cars don't 'see' the bikes because of the noise they make. It's all make believe, by the bikers.

I mean hell, Mrs. Mike K's girlfriend rides a crotch rocket as her mode of transportation. She says the loud muffler thing is total BS. I'm going to have to side with all of the common sense people who say noise means nothing, including a 5'0" bike riding lady, not the manchildren

It would be one thing if the mufflers projected 'towards' oncoming traffic, like emergency sirens. But they don't. They just rattle everything behind them.

This guy makes a good point. https://www.youtube....h?v=jM77vjnEaXw

And this 'scientific study' that claims to debunk the myth... I don't think its results support the conclusion though!  https://www.motorbis...is-safety-myth/

A New Study Confirms ‘Loud Pipes Save Lives’ Is a Safety Myth

This study was undertaken by the Romanian Association for the Development of Motorcycling, Autoweek reports, together with the Polytechnic University of Bucharest’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

In the study, six different bikes (unspecified) were revved to redline at various distances around a stationary car, MCN reports.

Specifically, 50 feet behind the car, 33 feet behind the car, right next to the car, and right in front of it.

Besides the motorcycle’s distances from the car, the study-runners varied the interior noise levels. The baseline was with the windows rolled up,
RideApart reports, and the next step had the car’s engine gently revving and the radio playing.

RESULTS:

If the bike is 50 feet away, it can’t even be heard inside the car. And that’s even with the loudest motorcycle’s exhaust peaking at 110 dB.

Plus, even with the distance closed to 33 feet, only one bike was clearly heard inside of the car.

Once the motorcycles got right next to the car, the loud pipes were audible. But even then, only one bike—that 110-dB one—was heard over the ambient interior noiseAutoweek reports. The rest were barely detectable.

This is a good example of a study whose conclusion isn't supported by the results. Doesn't this tell us that ONLY the outlier bike-- the really loud one -- was heard at 33' behind a vehicle, while all the other motorcycles weren't heard at all?

Like my good friend Mike K says,  you can't trust MSM to give you the unfiltered truth.

I mean really, how can they write that headline and come to that conclusion when the data suggest the exact opposite? And given that these are unspecified motorcycles in the study, we can't know anything about the validity. Like, were these all stock 250 single cylinder bikes? Did any of them have aftermarket loud pipes? This is junk science, and worse reporting, if I've ever seen it.

When a motorbike is behind another vehicle, the motorbike rider is 100% in control of the situation. That he is heard from behind is irrelevant, when it’s his actions that dictate safety.

The noise pollution from these clowns is pretty crazy, we can all agree, right? I can’t have sympathy for people who have so little regard for others, that they think deafening an entire neighbourhood is ‘for their safety.’ Gimme a break. Same story with all of the loud car exhausts, it’s only cool for small minds.

It’s the two stroke dual sports that are crazy loud.
