If the city council allows it then yes you can.

I think it's grey-ish.  When the question of the video signage came up, and the 3rd party advertising on it, RG said they "had a business relationship" with all the advertisers on it.  But that was when they only had a couple dozen.  Now anyone can advertise on it, and the only business relationship you have with RG is you pay them a fee to be on it.  Nothing has changed in the bylaws though.

Looking at the east side of the Era last night I noticed the flashing lights from the Odeon really light up that side of the building. If you bought on that side you'd need serious blinds to stop yourself from going crazy from the flashing lights.

Thats what city life is all about and why people  like living in the cente of everything

They will get used to it just like those that live in Chinatown or any other downtown of any city

They will also need to put up witb continuous noise day and night

Let me tell you, I stay late at the office sometimes and that alley can get very rowdy after midnight.  I think the street people like it as unless a cop is on foot, he can't see you too well in there.  That situation will get better as residents live there.

We used to have our office overlooking that alley. There were nights when the freakshow was incredibly entertaining.

There is a lot of domestic disputes - male vs. female - in the street community I find.

The distinction is that the got an exemption through the development process and it is a city building.

Ok, the Rogers Arena in Vancouver is privately owned (at least I am pretty sure it is)

Where does it say in city bylaws that as soon as Staples moves out of the building they have to take the sign down.  Lets say I own the building (which I don't for the record) and they are willing to pay me $50,000/year to keep the sign up

Sign bylaw, section 7.5

http://www.victoria....ylaw-92-030.pdf

As with most bylaws they are enforced mostly on a complaint driven basis. There are many examples of companies who have long vacated buildings that still have signage on them.

The arena sign that VHF mentioned is another good example. VHF is right in that complaints early on were explained by some nebulous relationship with the advertiser. A few years later and with no complaints pretty much anything goes.

No.  But they do get a certain amount of space on the sign x number of minutes per day, for free.  They get a portion of the naming rights at the arena.

Lately I've been thinking that the parking lot beside the Coronet would be a good spot for something a bit taller/slimmer:

There are lots of spots in Victoria that would be great for something taller/slimmer.

The view from my 'hood Shows a pretty stark need for some taller buildings before we have any sort of real 'skyline'.

We already have a skyline.

Well, a line on the sky, that is.

We really need a handful of 25-30 floor buildings in the downtown core. From a couple of kms away it gets hard to pick out individual buildings.
