Oh this one is new to me - thanks Susan!
Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one's mistakes.

Tofino online news site in limbo

Tofino-based Westcoaster.ca, an independent online news service that says it attracts thousands of readers a month, will "take a break" from daily news coverage as advertising revenue falls -- and may close permanently if business doesn't improve.

"We're a victim [of the economic downturn] like everyone else," Lloyd Samson, Westcoaster webmaster and minority partner with publisher Keven Drews, said in an interview.

In a message posted on Westcoaster.ca, Drews said the four-year-old operation serving the Tofino, Ucluelet and Long Beach area as well as Port Alberni needs increased ad revenue or it will have to start charging for subscriptions to survive.

Letter From The Publisher

Yet, as hard as we have worked, we haven’t attracted more advertisers. While many have continued to support our work – we really want to thank those businesses – others have dropped off.

Gaining new advertisers has been incredibly tough.

Some businesses have told us they don’t need to advertise. Some of these same businesses have also called or emailed and asked us to cover stories that highlight their businesses.

Others have complained about our ad rates, the most expensive of which is just $159 per month.

In a community where people can make good money serving food in a restaurant, we’ve found it impossible to find someone willing to sell ads.

"Beaver, ahoy!""The bridge is like a magnet, attracting both pedestrians and over 30,000 vehicles daily who enjoy the views of Victoria's harbour. The skyline may change, but "Big Blue" as some call it, will always be there."

By Westcoaster.ca Staff TOFINO — After nearly five and one-half years of publication, Westcoaster.ca will cease operations Monday.

The reason is simple: the publication is not receiving the advertising support necessary to continue, and it does not appear like that situation will change.

We'd like to take the time to thank the businesses that have supported this publication. Because of you, we were able to do some great work and break some big stories, many of which went national.

We'd also like to thank those who have read the publication, cheered us on and fed us tips.

Media outlets with inquiries can email Keven Drews, the publication's founder, at ykdrews@hotmail.com. Keven is currently in Western Australia, which is 16 hours ahead of Vancouver, so responses may take time.

It's no small feat to run an online operation like that, particularly one that focuses on smaller communities where economic ups and downs can be much more pronounced.

Know it all.
