They've moved the hoist to the other lane and are working on/inspecting the south side trusses in the same general area.  Does anyone know what they're actually doing?

Last week (I think Thursday at around 6PM) the bridge deck was lowered but for some reason traffic didn't start. The operator raised the deck a few feet and then lowered it again. It took some time before traffic was allowed to cross again.

Perhaps they waited until the weekend to do an inspection to see if they could find the cause of the problem.

That tends to happen every now and then. It's actually kind of creepy how the hulking giant just stops a few feet from the roadway and appears to get stuck.

Yeah, I've seen that quite frequently.

The inspections, or whatever they were doing has completed.  Traffic is back to normal.

Some bridge repair is underway...

They're doing some welding on the old bridge, traffic is moving fine.

Looks like it was a pretty substantial repair...

They were on site most of the day.  I wonder if a vehicle hit the corner of the railing?  Notice the new cross brace to the main truss, in addition to the entirely new railing end cap.  If some kind of blow didn't cause this then I would say this bridge is way past its "best by" date.

Imagine predicting to City Hall back in 2009 that some truss repair work will be done IN THE YEAR 2016. They'd think you were nuts or an unreasonable pessimist.

They know it's gotta last another ten years.

The information we've been forwarded indicates that an excavator on a lowbed trailer struck the bridge. Victoria Police are seeking information from witnesses of the event. Odd thing is the incident occurred back in the fall.

On a lighter note, The Wardells recorded a classic song about the bridge, "Under the Johnson Street Bridge".  Maybe the only song ever recorded about the bridge?

The video captures just a short clip of the bridge itself, but does provide several scenes of 80's Victoria.

The JSB footage at the beginning of that Excess Baggage movie is really good. It was on TV recently.

Back in '67 they weren't worried about snow removal?

Good thing about the old bridge: the snow just fell through the deck grating.

After repeated inquiries from Kingstonist over the course of several days, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has released an update regarding the Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation project on the LaSalle Causeway.

The Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation Project is the next project occurring on the LaSalle Causeway and, according to a release from PSPC, construction was originally scheduled to take place during the traditional off-season, from November 2022 to the end of April 2023. No responsive bids were received from the construction tender that closed on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, so construction for this winter season has been officially postponed, the government agency stated, however, in June of this year, PSPC told Kingstonist the construction contract had already been awarded. The reasoning for this discrepency is unknown at time of publication.

According to the release, PSPC expects to re-tender the construction contract in early 2023 with the expectation that construction will occur next year during the traditional off-season, from November 2023 to the end of April 2024.

The work includes strengthening and replacing various components of the Bascule Bridge, replacing the steel deck grating and supporting stringer, rehabilitating the deteriorated content on the counterweight, and strengthening the supporting steel truss member at the main trunnions.

The La Salle Causeway is a causeway that allows Highway 2 to cross the Cataraqui River (the southern entrance of the Rideau Canal) at Kingston, Ontario. The causeway separates Kingston's inner and outer harbours. Construction of the causeway was completed on April 15, 1917.

Three bridges are incorporated into the causeway, the centre one being a Strauss trunnion bascule lift bridge, which was designed by Joseph Strauss, who designed the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

This bridge is still being repaired.  Scheduled to get another 30 years of life.

This project will extend the service life of each of the components by another 30 years. It will improve the condition and operation of the Bascule Bridge, and ensure the safety of bridge users.

I wonder if our salt water impacted the JSB more than a bascule bridge across freshwater.

It’s possible. But a bridge in Kingston is going to see lots of extremes, including temperatures, and of course road salt.

It’s not like our bridge was subject to constant salt water spray.
