Zaffran abruptly closes...
Another casualty in what must be a cursed restaurant corner (Yates and Wharf). The place was empty and it looks like the bus staff sure left in a hurry!
Maybe the third time is the charm? It's going to be Indian food or bust, or bust, or... This "new" incarnation of an Indian food restaurant, called New Asian Village, the "Ultimate in East Indian Cuisine", is already a bit confusing. It's a small chain that has a few locations in Edmonton that have been around for many years so we'll see. http://www.newasianvillage.com/

There is already a stop work order on the New Asian Village for lack of permits.

Makase Izakaya and sushi bar has opened on Blanshard across from the Royal Theatre.
Stellar quality and service. Worth a visit.
Yes, we had a great meal too. The former sushi chef from Japanese Village works here. If you can, sit at the counter and have what he recommends.

Interesting. I was thinking, who cares, another sushi joint until I read that.

You seem to hate sushi almost as much as HB hates Victoria.

I actually love it and usually have sushi once a week. But I think there is a glut of mediocrity. I used to love the sushi bar at Japanese Village and now I'm wanting to try this new place.
We tried the new Village restaurant in Torquay Village on upper Shelbourne and it is as good as the one on Estevan. It is very tiny but they are planning a 30 seat patio. The burgers must be good because I saw some being delivered to the Dominos Pizza next door.

HB, Nice photos of the menu showing the beer lineup. It's nice to see the craft-local selection. I was expecting to see OTTO FUND pizza on the menu HA HA.
The pizza crust/ dough looks a little pre-prepared. Looks like electric ovens, not wood fired? Can we say the pizza is like, say, famoso, or does it measure up to Prima Strada? Enquiring minds NEED to know!

My Take on the Pizza.
I tried 2 pieces.
Pepperoni and Cheese.
Dough is made onsite.
Cooked in flat oven (gas)
Pizza is sold by the pie or by the piece.
The Pizzas are very basic and unlike many of the chain places with too many toppings.
The crust is not stiff nor is it hard.and crunchy.
It is soft
When holding the slice it flops down so the best way to eat it is to fold the piece.
Verdict....Go in and try some.
I will go again for sure...
Here is what that place looked like when it was first demo'd inside
Pics are from March 2013

My Take on the Pizza.
...
Now that Famous Original is open, Victorians will need to know how to properly eat New York style pizza - and Donald Trump will NOT be our guide.
