Bill Stuart, calendar editor, has been let go for economic reasons according to this week's Monday. My sales rep left about a month ago (don't know details), and was not replaced - they have just three right now, including the sales manager.

Black Press has recently re-organized staff, like moving Keith from Vic News to Saanich. Word was BP generally are doing fairly well and normally they let Monday do its own thing. However, local gross print advertising has dropped appreciably - especially in job postings and autos. Wonder how much squeeze was put on John T to cut costs.

For the last two issues, I've noticed Monday Mag subjecting us to full page ciggarette ads, sometimes up to three per issue.

Looks like Monday is lowering their standards just to make an advertising buck.

I don't think they ever rejected ads from certain sectors.

I don't think you can.

Cigarettes are not illegal - so fair play for an advertising driven industry. I've never appreciated the last pages (sexual services ads) in Monday but I just ignore them as the price of reading a free publication.

I am afraid I have to side with Monday Magazine on this one - as hypocritical as their allowance of tobacco advertising seems to be. They are free to choose their advertisers and I am free to never pick up a copy of their magazine if I dislike the advertisers they choose.

Yeah I have no problem with them making a buck in these tight times at all.

These ads could very well make the difference between having Monday at all. Who knows.

They should consider working a lot harder on the journalistic quality of the paper. Then maybe they wouldn't have to resort so readily to cigarette ads and hooker pages.

Thats the thing - the only way they can attract and keep good journalists is by seeking and recieving ad revenues to cover costs.

I actually think Monday mag does a pretty good job of it myself. They sure stepped up to the plate during the last civic election - and as a subject in a few of their stories I was impressed by their diligence towards fact checking - and respecting my request to keep a few comments off the record. As an ex journalist myself - I was impressed and would trust them in the future as professionals.

Yes, I am frequently incensed by the nonsense they print (Like the empty condo theory) but at the same time, they have yet to misquote me. Can't say the same about some other local media.

Just bringing the thread back from the dead to remind people to visit Bill at his new location, Phillips Brewing, 2010 Government St. Go buy a $10 growler of the best brew in Victoria. He'll be happy.

I'm really intrigued by this growler concept. I think I'll give it a try.

MM is out with their first annual FEET issue today. Are they running out of feature ideas, or is this what they've needed after 40 years of never having a foot issue?

At 28 pages, it doesn't seem to have captured the imagination of the foot advertisers in town, like their beer issue did a few weeks back that topped out at 32 pages, IIRC.

A friend was asked to write some beer-related articles for them. He asked me help write with him. We've done two articles so far. Anything you guys want to read about that's related to beer in Victoria?

Looks like J. Youmans is gone, replaced with the lady that did the escort feature this week.
