What happens to all the couches, clothing, TVs, etc. that people leave on boulevards? Is there a city crew that hauls it away?  If so, is the homeowner charged a fee?

It is hard to fine homeowners because rarely do people abandon items outside their own homes. They dump stuff off on other people's property or on public land.

I don't know what is spent on it today, but in 2008 the City of Victoria budget request for removal of abandoned items was $98,000. And that's just Victoria, not including Saanich, Esquimalt, Oak Bay etc. etc.

But with garbage bins getting smaller, it's harder to throw away stuff anymore. If you can arrange transportation to Hartland you can get your mattress and box spring recycled for less than $20 but many people just can't be bothered and there it is, an eyesore by the side of the road that you and I have to pay for.

There is often stuff left on the boulevard in front of our townhouse. I want to put a sign out front that says "not our stuff".

Yup, it happens all the time in Vic West. People bring furniture and junk from God knows where and they dump it in front of commercial properties that have no people milling about in the evenings or over the weekend. It sucks and the tax payer has to foot the bill. Luckily Victoria's work crews are pretty good about this stuff and taken it away when they notice it.
