Isn't CHEK the "Island's News," with a market of 700,000?

Market size isn't determined by how the station defines it; it's determined by the CRTC. The entire island can watch CHEK and it does cover up island news, but that's not how the CRTC defines the market size. People from the island watch Vancouver news stations and the island gets some coverage, but those viewers aren't counted in the Vancouver market.

Fifth anniversary of the employee-owned variant of CHEK this weekend, including tonight a history of the station from the beginning including various behind the scenes and of course on air personalities. Needless to say it was both heart warming and a bit weird and fairly high on the creepy scale to see your own father "alive and talking" on the evening news, two years after he passed away.....

I responded to you a bit late in regards Sparky but here is a link to the actual clip if you missed it. From about the 2:00 point on was a bit surreal for about 30 seconds.

Yes, I watched the last 15 minutes but the early days was the part I was interested in. I did not see your link though. Did you type that with invisible link? :)

Long time ex-CHEK anchor Philip Campbell passed away today from (skin) cancer; he was 65 which is hard to believe because he certainly did not look his age. Phil worked at the station from 1987-2009. Good anchor, nice man. Better person.

How sad that CHEK didn't devote any air time to honour one of their own.

I thought this was quite odd and many on FB have commented on it; as I said there when our dad passed in 2012 they did nearly 3 minutes on him with a nice retrospective which is an eternity in terms of airtime - and he left CHEK in 1970 after a 10 year run; Philip was on air for 22 years. Makes me wonder if there wasn't a less than amicable parting of the ways. OTOH he would have been 60 when he left so perhaps it was simply a case of him retiring. Strange though that it wasn't even mentioned on the broadcast tonight.

And so it turns out CHEK has apparently refrained from mentioning his passing at the request of the family so I am told, which is perfectly fair and understandable. Although on FB many are also wondering why the station hasn't referenced his death.

Obviously the story is "out" there including on most of the Northwest Media (BC, Alberta, Washington State) sites that cover radio and TV including the excellent Puget Sound Radio site. Interestingly and purely by coincidence PSR is owned and managed by Mike Easton who, like my own dad, is an ex-CHEK personality.

Well that's bizarre, why wouldn't you at least mention it? That makes no sense that has longtime employer was asked to refrain from mentioning anything but countless other mediums did.

Mike Walker, sports anchor and reporter, is leaving CHEK in a few weeks. His job was recently posted.

It will be tough finding someone to fill his shoes (especially when that person has to pay $4500 as a buy-in for the privilege of working there).
