I think it was just bad optics. People would sneer; "huh, free parking..."

Thing is, it's actually a wise thing. A mayor (or President, Premier, CEO etc.) has to do many things over the course of a day--it's what we pay them for. And making the mayor hike up and down a parkade staircase just so we can feel smug that he's now down to "our level", well, that just seems wasteful and petty.

Well, the next door parkade does have street level spots (to be candid, I don't think a little "hike up and down a parkade staircase" would be doing any physical harm, to anyone, quite the contrary).

As to your other point, I'd always thought in terms of his car being on so obvious display helps make him seem 'one of us', not some hidden behind closed doors bureaucrat (though, the regular 'open door' bit helps there, though I've never taken advantage that).

All they would have to have done is put a meter in front of his spot and then he could pay for it like anyone else but have easy access to work.

The Mayor is always going on about bicycles, he doesn't need a spot to park his car.

Besides, there are enough empty smart car parking spots all over downtown at his disposal ;)

In the City of Victoria is an owner/resident allowed to park a vehicle in their yard?

I've never seen a vehicle parked in a yard, only on a driveway. Good question though.

What about homes with driveways that go up the side of the house, to the back, can they load many vehices into their back yard?

There are a couple of houses I come across that almost always have vehicles parked in the front yard redneck style. Kind of annoys me.

I know someone who has a garage door in the front of his house and another one in the rear, so that he can put extra cars he's working on out there.

An interesting story out of Toronto today:

Anyone know if we have similar 'booby traps' here?

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

^ Our curbs are supposed to be marked so I would hope we don't.

If that spot is still like that, how about sandblasting off the remaining paint and re-painting the loading zone curb?

A resident in my building complained to the city about cars parking too close to our driveway. The yellow curb was re-painted within a week. (I think she was being a bit of a whiner, you could see just fine and its a small residential road).

Is there a bylaw for parking really close to someone's driveway entrance? I assume the homeowner would have to complain before a ticket is issued.

On Monday, September 15th City of Victoria parkades will automatically include the first hour free and free parking in the evenings between 6PM and 8AM. A "SafeWalk" service will also be offered for those who want to be escorted to their car by security. Hourly rates will fall to $2/hour.

Beginning Monday in city parkades:

• First hour is free.
• Evening parking is free Monday to Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.
• Parking is free on Sundays and holidays.
• Rates have been reduced to $2 per hour (charged in 15-minute increments), Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
• The vehicle day rate at a city parkade is $12 ($14 at Bastion Square Parkade due to higher demand).
• The motorcycle day rate at a city parkade is $4. (Motorcycle parking is available at city parkades except at Johnson Street parkade).
• A lost ticket will be charged the day rate.
• Lower levels are signed as short-term, three-hour maximum parking Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.   to 4 p.m. Longer-term parking is available on mid and upper levels at city parkades (lower levels at Broughton, as it’s an underground parkade).
• More payment options offered.
•  A SafeWalk service provides the option of calling a parkade security guard to meet and accompany a motorist to their vehicle. - See more at: http://www.timescolo...h.bIf0tpcn.dpuf

If drivers are concerned about being safe in the parkade, is there a security guard available to walk you from your vehicle to the street?
