I am new to this site and shocked that there is not a thread for Caravana Cafe. Located at 2984 Jutland Road, it is just off of the Gorge & Jutland intersection. It is a eat-in or to go joint run by a Palestinian man and his Pakistani wife.

This place is open regular business hours 9-5pm. It's nestled amongst some government offices so the lunch-time crowd is usually out the door. Offers many lunch combos such as shawarma wrap with salad, sandwiches, coffee & muffins. This is truly a hidden gem in Victoria, prices are extremely reasonable. I highly recommend this place!

It's right in the Selkirk development? That little street is a great place for a tasty restaurant. I wish them the best.

Can you describe what's in the shawarma? For example, does it include pickled turnips? I haven't been able to find a decent (and cheap - it is expensive, here!) shawarma/felalfel/shish taouk place since I left Montreal.

Directly across from the Montessori School? I must not have been paying attention.

No, not directly across, just up the road from the Montessori School. It is one of the first units on Jutland of that lowrise building just off the roundabout

Caravana is amazing, I used to eat there all the time when I worked in one of the offices down there, in fact one of my old office mates and I were photographed with the owners and in the paper, I believe the article was up on the wall last time I was in there. Its been open for quite some time, i don't think quite 10 years, but def. a good 7 or 8.

Oh I know that place, I had lunch there once with my godmother! Fantastic lunch, and the produce was very very fresh (which I appreciate very very much.) Reasonable price too, if I recall correctly. Also, they must be used to serving the rushed lunch crowd because the food was ready almost immediately.

Last time I had it I distinctively remember it having hummus, tahini and toum, and was full of the traditional vegetables the authentic shawarmas have. I believe they served it with the traditional tabouli salad. Sorry but I wouldn't be able to give you an answer about the turnips or not. This place has a far better (and real) shawarma than Blair Mart on Pandora.

Sadly, there is not a lick of authenticity to these shawarmas. Although the food is fresh and tasty in its own right, it is far from the real stuff. The search continues...

For some reason I thought there was a thread somewhere.

We've been going there pretty much since it opened. Lovely people and yes the food is fantastic!

They're in at least their fourth year so they must be doing something right :)

When was the development completed? I'm sure they've been there since the beginning.

owners (who are nice and work damn hard) have seemed quite tired for a while - have tried to get help without much success.

Damn good food.

The description for the business reads:

This cafe can be run as a 2 person operation to maximize profits.

It doesn't sound like there is all that much money available to hire more than one or two staff at the most.

This place has changed ownership the past few years..

I sue to go frequently but after today, I will not be back.

2016 Visits:

1st Visit-Dolmades rices was mushy, there was no consistency because it had been so over cooked...
2nd Visit-Spanakopita was beyond soggy, it had been reheated in the microwave, worst thing you can do to Phyllo pastry. Greek salad was topped with an Italian Dressing base made out of Vinegar...just not appetizing
3rd Visit-there wont be one...2 in 2016 was too many.

Food in my eyes, was horrible
