Taxi drivers are not required to wear seatbelts. Makes you wonder if this driver was or wasn't wearing one.

I see these guys blazing down the streets on weekend nights to get their fare to wherever its going and race back downtown as fast as possible. It's not uncommon to see taxis doing 70 or 80 in a 50 come 2AM.

Only one passenger was wearing a seatbelt, he was the least injured, the other two are critical.

It was in the 40KMH speed zone, take that CARS, although he may have been fudging on that by a little.

I am rarely on the road at that time of night. But recently I was the designated driver from a friends 50th bday party. And this accident brought that night back to my memory.  A few civilian cars and CRAZY driving by the taxis, not only doing ridiculous speeds but stopping where ever they felt like it, and because they are used to the roads being empty, turning without even looking to see if there is another car. I wouldn't worry about the drunks at 2 am but the taxis that are supposed to be keeping the drunks safe.

Yup, it's a problem. Hopefully this accident sheds light on just how dangerous some operators are. On the weekends in particular they feel like they're operating with impunity because police are busy dealing with disturbances and don't have a lot of time for general patrol.

As tragic as this accident is I truly hope it gives the industry a reason to reflect on it's practices.

Not one time have I ever seen a cop pull a taxi over. I've seen them speed, make unsafe lane changes, run red lights, honk at other road users who had the right of way, cut off other drivers, stop in the middle of the road, stop in bike lanes, etc. etc., all right in front of cops. Sometimes it's even painfully obvious the cab itself is not roadworthy.

No action taken. Why?

Unfortunately, the taxi cartel does not care what you or I think. Maybe that's why they don't care. No consequences.

The west bound lane of the JSB was temporarily closed this evening as three police cars attended to a group of people hanging out on the north side of the bridge.  It wasn't too long ago that some drunk kid died from climbing on the bridge and then falling.  Sorry for the lower quality as I didn't have time to set up the tripod.

^Traffic can get going at a pretty good clip along that stretch, 80-90kmh anyway.

But.. but.. it's a 60k zone!  That's what happens when you build it to look like the Pat Bay.

Anyway, given the right conditions, it takes very little speed to flip a car https://www.youtube....tR1MqkIcsk#t=37

I like the taxi behind.  "OK.... ah ha.. OK...around this guy.. on my way!"

This is the crash on the Malahat 45 minutes ago. No injuries.  Apparently a passing semi-trailer caused a draft that made the trailer go wonky, according to one witness.

I wouldn't be surprised if that trailer was too heavy for the Titan too.

Some high-profile, controversial incidents have brought the issue of police traffic stops to light recently, including the deaths of Jermaine Carby in Brampton, Ont., and Sandra Bland in Texas.

Police shot Carby after a traffic stop, while Bland was found dead in her cell three days after being detained after a traffic stop in Texas.

So, what rules apply when police make traffic stops?

First, here are the basics:

  • Driving is considered a privilege, not a right, meaning police have wide discretion on the roads.
  • Police can pull you over for no reason. "They can stop you and you don't have to have done anything wrong," says Toronto criminal defence lawyer Ryan Handlarski.
  • You must pull over if an officer wants you to.
  • You must show police your licence, registration and insurance information when asked but are not obliged to answer any other questions or provide details that would incriminate you, says Handlarski. This differs slightly from street checks, or "carding," where you do not have to provide any identification.
  • In Canada, passengers do not have to give police their identification. Police can, however, ask passengers questions. In the U.S., police can legally demand information from passengers, too.
  • Police can't search your car without arresting you first, or without a warrant. This also differs from our southern counterparts. In the U.S., police can search your car if they have reason to believe it contains evidence of a crime. U.S. police can even take your car apart. "When they say search your car, that means everything — including pulling the fenders off, pulling the gas tank out," says Scott Greenfield, a New York-based criminal defence lawyer.
  • You must obey any lawful command a police officer gives you.

Our local road safety squad likes the random approach to traffic stops: http://www.goldstrea.../291728301.html

Of course, this all assumes that the police officer involved will respect your rights.

I have never taken kindly to going through road checks and having a cop stick his head in my window to smell my breath.

Now when I pull up to one I roll down the window enough to talk but not enough for him to stick his face in uninvited

I have been asked to roll it down and my answer is the same...it is down.

A couple years ago i did this and when he was making his move to stick his face in my window I offered him my breath by way of gently blowing some breath at him.

He freaked out and ranted about me possibly having a disease and giving it to him...when he askled why I did that I said that I was helping him out be saving him the effort of sticking his face in my car.

He freaked out a little more then told me to Get the F outa here.
