If it's laid, drained and maintained properly it can be.

  1. Which would lead to much higher maintenance costs, and
  2. Not physically possible. Part of the maintenance of grass is allowing sufficient recovery time. Turf has no recovery time required. Grass fields must be shut down during heavy or prolonged rains or they are destroyed. Turf is only affected by severe rainstorms (if at all).

Good drainage base + the perfect soil texture ratios + appropriate grass seed it can be achieved. No I don't know of a single example in the CRD, but it can be done, all the grass sports fields in the CRD suck. No not 24.7/365 Maybe 320/10 hours a day which would be probably the most the field would be used. Crumb rubber is not maintenance-free and crumb rubber and needs to be re-topped from time to time.

The volume of crumb rubber the birds eat would presumably be quite great?

Sorry Todd but your have your facts wrong.

Firstly, I never said artificial turf was, "maintenance-free".

Second, the ration of hours of use to hours of maintenance is vastly different for grass vs turf. This means that grass cannot be used for a significantly greater time than turf.

From the Center for Turfgrass Science at Penn State:

There is a limit to the amount of traffic that even the best managed [grass] turf can withstand without excessive injury. This must be recognized if frequent costly repairs are to be avoided. Some of the things that often can be done to reduce injury are:

  • Schedule a minimum of use when fields are wet.
  • Rotate play areas, where size of area permits, to provide a resting and recovery period for turf showing the effects of wear.
  • Avoid concentrated trampling, such as practicing band formations, whenever possible.
  • Limit or withhold use of newly seeded areas until a mature turf has developed.
  • Avoid use of the field in the spring until the turf has had an opportunity to recover from winter dormancy.
  • Keep off the area when there has been surface thawing of frozen turf.

Mechanical raking of turf fields takes nowhere near as much time as all the above.

Don't think I said anything that disagrees with that.

What's the lifespan on a crumb rubber turf field?

One reason I like grass is because it's constantly renewing itself every time it's mowed it’s brand new, flushing itself and the soil of toxins, not to mention animal excrement etc., which is achieved by the growing process and the sprinkler system.

Artificial turf field is limited to rain water to cleanse itself, unless there is a willingness for cleaning maintenance.

About as long as it takes to tire of this question.

One reason I like grass ...

I prefer real grass as well but on a school property, for use upwards of 300 days per year, artificial turf is the only realistic option. Especially as much of the cost is "front-loaded". The last thing the school wants to pay for is maintenance.

Less than three years after the completion of Oak Bay High's expansion and field improvements, the rugby (grass) field needs to be replaced.

They've been trying for months now to secure a bidder without any luck. They've extended the bidding process by two months or so.

Tender details:

“The existing rugby field was completed in 2016 and is approximately 10,000 square meters in size”

“Work will include removal and disposal of the existing topsoil layer, removal, partial salvage, and reinstallation of the existing irrigation system, protection of the existing field drainage system, and supply and installation of new drainage and topsoil layers as well as seeding and established maintenance of the field.”

I looked at the addenda and contractors are asking questions so there are people who are interested.  What a let down I was thinking maybe I'll throw in a bid for $5 million and call my bonding company for a bond.  Damn!

Chunks from Oak Bay High artificial turf field ending up in Bowker Creek

“.. Friends of Bowker Creek Society, said several members of the group visited the field recently to clean up and swept up about 60 pounds of the material… “:
