"The only relics that mark Rock Bay’s residential past are the plum trees dotting the neighborhood..."

With the proposed redevelopment of the formerly industrial-heavy Capital Iron lands between Chatham street and Discovery street into an arts and innovation district, there is very little land left in the city dedicated to industry.

Surface parking lots = land dedicated to industry

As Obelix would say, "these Victorians are crazy." A fine old residential district was transformed by industrial and commercial uses, but by total fluke there are still some traces of the residential character left. Why does everything have to be another problem, another tension? For crying out loud, any city that actually cared one bit about its character or about its history would try to find an innovative way to make it all work together. But no, there's always scarcity, there are always intractable problems that persist for decades... because otherwise people would start to wonder why no progress ever seems to be made on anything, right?

Aastra showed in photos what I was going to say. There at least a dozen heritage houses still in that area - some of them are still homes though most are offices for businesses.

I would agree that the streets near Ellice House are particularly gross and the city is very lax in enforcing any rules. It's too bad the businesses in that area don't kind of "adopt" Ellice House and help it thrive.

If I’m a business owner in that area, what’s the point? Any investment in making the place nice will surely be vandalized/stolen/become a place for people to shoot up and pass out. This council would rather protect a haven for lawlessness than improve and beautify a district to make it more habitable for working folks.

This is why I sometimes suggest there should be a forked-tongue serpent on the city of Victoria's official crest.

"Hey, we should try to create brand new mixed-use industrial/residential areas in north downtown and on the Vic West waterfront. That way we can show everyone how enlightened and innovative we are."

"Okay, but isn't there already a long-established but sorely neglected mixed-used industrial/residential area in Rock Bay/Burnside?"

"Stop trying to change the subject."

As a former business owner in that (up to 2 years ago), we were surprised how little lawlessness we saw and experienced. Prior to being in the Rock Bay area, we were downtown. We experienced almost no issues in the Rock Bay area, unlike the constant problems downtown.

We swung by the Emterra operation on the weekend to see what all the fuss was about.

At first glance there didn't seem to be too much out of the ordinary for a recycle business.

But a closer look revealed a repulsive layer of this fudge that not only looked nasty but smelled worse.

I think Enterra is the only place where one can get new blue recycling bags? Ours are falling apart and when I tried to find out where to get more, that was the only place that came up. I don't fancy going there, plus I would have to drive!

Funny how a dog on your business doorstep will earn you a frontal assault by bylaw staff yet with garbage and filth and there is nothing anyone can do.

One of Victoria’s most infamous disasters occurred on this day 126 years ago.

On May 26, 1896, the Point Ellice Bridge collapsed while a streetcar was crossing over it, killing 55 people.

The event would become known as The Point Ellice Bridge Disaster.

I could have sworn Lisa Helps was only elected as mayor in 2014.
