The commute on donkey back is killer though.
Nowadays most people die of a sort of creeping common sense, and discover when it is too late that the only things one never regrets are one's mistakes.

Does anybody remember the series "Rome" IIRC. Everybody there lived above shops of some sort but the main character always hankered after a life in the country.

Some people like to live amid the hubub of a downtown core, others don't - doesn't make one right or wrong, it just makes them different.
Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

Exactly. Which is why if you don't like it you should not try and conform it to your tranquille idyll eden

Feature article in the Globe about big box stores moving into downtown Toronto:

http://www.theglobea...article1913912/

“The numbers are extremely compelling,” said Ed Sonshine, chief executive officer of shopping-mall developer RioCan. “It costs a lot more to be in the city, but places like Winners have proven that it’s well worth it.”

The major hindrance to big-box expansion in Toronto has not been attracting customers, but actually finding space big enough to accommodate even miniature versions of stores known primarily for their scale.

“They’re used to building a one-storey store that’s 100,000 feet with another seven acres of parking,” said Mr. Sonshine. “That just is impossible in the city. Even if you could find it, you could never afford it.”

...many brands are focusing instead on the opportunities of new build condominiums.

At Queen Street West and Portland, Mr. Sonshine’s RioCan is building a development that will house a 45,000-sq.-ft. Loblaws, an 8,000-sq.-ft. Joe Fresh and a 29,000-sq.-ft. Winners outlet in the base of a condo tower.

Off topic, but Winners is the most ironically named store in retail.

There is a big box store in the base of a condo building near GM Place forget whether it is Walmart or Superstore though. It is actually pretty impressive that Staples came into our market.

Amen to that. It's basically Value Village with better marketing (and much higher prices).

It's unsold merchandise from other stores or suppliers, right?

Winners is actually a good place to get good quality clothes at reduced prices. They get overstocked, new goods from other stores and sell them at a discount. I've paid 20 bucks for $100 shirts. I find it how to understand how this is for losers.

Winners is really hit or miss but I've found some great stuff in there for dirt cheap. I've found name brand, good quality dress clothes for t-shirt prices.

I've got some awesome golf and beach clothes there as well.

Graffiti found in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii:

The city block of the Arrii Pollii in the possession of Gnaeus Alleius Nigidius Maius is available to rent from July 1st. There are shops on the first floor, upper stories, high-class rooms and a house. A person interested in renting this property should contact Primus, the slave of Gnaeus Alleius Nigidius Maius.

After reading all the graffiti left behind in Pompeii, it is nice to see that human nature has not changed!
