Winter Opening Day scheduled for 9:00 am, December 9th, conditions permitting.

It is great to see all the new snow on the mountain!

While we get ready for our scheduled opening day on Friday, December 9 please respect and obey all closures. In addition to the snowcats, snowmobiles and excavators that are all out on the slopes preparing the terrain, there are also numerous unmarked hazards. To keep everyone safe please stay off of the terrain and allow us the time to get things prepared and ready for you to ski and board safely.

Night Skiing starts December 15th, 3:30pm-9pm

Ski season is just around the corner on Vancouver Island but the Vancouver Island Avalanche Centre says caution is required.

Jan Neuspiel, lead forecaster with the centre, says a big dump of snow will tempt many into the backcountry where avalanche conditions are very risky.

"All this new snow, this storm snow, has weaknesses in it. It's come in great quantity and come with a lot of wind," he told All Points West host Robyn Burns.

Mount Washington, the Island's biggest ski destination, won't officially open until Dec. 9, but that won't stop many from heading out to enjoy the conditions this weekend.

Neuspiel says the centre won't have enough data to have a full avalanche forecast by this weekend, but during coming storms, the danger of them "is at a high level."

Be careful out there.

A snowboarder has suffocated after falling into deep powder snow on a glade run in Blackcomb Resort’s Crystal Ridge area, just a week into the resort’s ski season.

The 27-year-old was in a tree run known as Arthur’s Choice Saturday morning when he encountered problems and died in the seemingly bottomless snow.

Whistler Search and Rescue manager Brad Sills warned on Sunday that going off the main runs at this time of year can be dangerous as there are still many hazards buried under the surface.

“It is early season,” he said of the conditions in the alpine areas. “You have to be extra precautionary, there are open creek beds, open crevasses, there are lots of hazards out there right now.”

Snowed a bit today.

Opening is set for December 8th (or I'd guess earlier if they can).  Sounds like they are set with snow-makers if required this year.

Epic snowfall at Mount Washington today, starting around mid day and picking up steam into the evening. This is on top of the nearly 1 metre that fell last week. Took people a long time to get down the road today. Reports of 3-5 hours from Alpine parking lot to Sunrise chair.  There was a bus stuck. Also lots of folks with no snow tires nor chains.  The road up the mountain is currently closed to let people get safely down the mountain.

Assuming folks can get up to the hill it will be an amazing day tomorrow. Especially since the snow should finally stop mid morning.

It was chaos up there today. Snow came down faster than the plows and blowers could keep up. Anyone who was parked outside overnight had an epic digging job to get going today.  Talked to one front end loader operator who had been working on snow removal for 31 hours with only a few short breaks. Really makes one appreciate the folks that work hard to keep our roads open.

All the kids I saw were totally loving it, playing outside. I am sure the epic snow day was more memorable than an ordinary day of skiing.

Well good morning! 125 cm in the last 48 hours of light fluffy snow is waiting for YOU! Hawk, Whiskey Jack and 1 Magic Carpet will be running today. Avalanche control continues on Eagle and Boom and we will update along the way. Grab your snorkel, it’s on!

There are three vehicles in this photo outside the building where we stayed :-)

One of many cars stranded along the road.  Somebody cleared a patch so that the plow driver wouldn't think this was just a hump of snow.

Also very pretty

Wow, that looks so cool. The kids won't forget that any time soon!

But that truck. Nice! It might not be yours, but that's the sort of thing you want when scaling up a snowy mountain.
