Whatever, I hear this kind of thing all the time, it's bunk.  Esp. for tourists.

Some no-parking acheivements:

Milestone's Inner Harbour is the highest-grossing Milestones in the chain.  Zero parking.

Strathcona Hotel is the highest-selling bar/restaurant in the city.  Zero parking.

Victoria's harbour airport is the second-busiest in Canada, no free parking.

Cactus Club Victoria, #4 in the chain, no parking.

Chataeu Victoria, Empress and Executive House all have less parking stalls available than rooms.

What's all the other advantages, History Buff?

Milestone's actaully used to be a parking garage, so it is not only zero parking, it actually reduced the parking in the area when that development went in (which yes, was before Milestones, but still)

IMO, a casino is the ONLY reason non-residents go to View Royal, so I would imagine The Crystal Casino would attract Victorians as well as visitors.

I went into VR casino once, what a depressing and ugly place it is. At least in Vegas they have grand foyers and hallways etc.

Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

I poked in there once as well. Sad place. And what's worse is you step out onto the "Colwood Strip" and realize what a terrible mistake you've made leaving downtown.

Know it all.

So the location and ambiance of  The Crystal Casino should work in its favour then.

Is there anything to suggest a casino is being considered for this space or is this purely speculation?

Just idle speculation.

City Hall has received three different expressions of interest from potential users of the Crystal Garden. The city says inquiries have been made by Butterfly Gardens; Macaloney Brewers and Distillers, and Oceans Network Canada. How the city will proceed to assess the proposals is under discussion at a Council committee meeting today.

Now, is this going to take over the existing conference centre space in the CG or just a portion of it so the City can still use it for overflow conventions? I'm not sure about these proposals. I presume Oceans Network wants to build some sort of attraction like the Shaw Discovery Centre? Butterfly Gardens sounds like a less interesting version of the zoo that used to be there.

Butterfly Gardens is good where it is because a majority of their business from May to Sept is from Cruise ship passengers. Many Many many busloads of people head there from the Ogden dock. Their current location can accommodate 6 buses which park on site will the tourists take their 45 minute excursion inside.

Those tours are usually coordinated with and in conjunction with Butchart Gardens tours which is just up the road.

It would be a mistake to move them into Crystal Gardens due to all of the added motor coach traffic in an all ready congested area and due to lack of parking for said vehicles.

That building should be used for a distillery in my opinion along with a restaurant so that locals can enjoy the building free of charge and not be locked out due to having to pay admission to a tacky tourist operation

The Butterfly Gardens plan is not to replace their existing location.

Hmm. Ocean Networks could really make an interesting attraction, though I agree that the Shaw Discovery centre covers much of what ONC would do.

Butterfly gardens - meh. Though I disagree with HB's assessment regarding buses and parking. This is downtown. Cruise passengers would include it in a downtown visit - walking or drop off on Government as usual. Other visitors can use the parkades as usual. Not really any different than going to the RBCM.

Brewery - if done right, I like this option, though I'm still not convinced it can do as well as a casino.

I doubt any of the proposals would do as well as a casino. I guess the brewery is a slam-dunk. The other proposals are entirely ho-hum.

I really hope its not a butterfly garden. That is something I would never go to. Distillery-restaurant-cafe-extras is something I would spend money at.

The whole thing I presume, excluding the existing retail around the base.
