According to Coulson, it happened during the winter of 1987-88; a typical rainy, foggy night in Victoria. Alan Danyleyko, aka “Big Al,” was working the door at Merlin’s for the popular weekly Ladies Night event, emceed by Patricia Mumford. “She would circle the dance floor throughout the show,” says Coulson. “One night, she came in late for work. She was all flustered, her hair damp and flattened. Al said she looked like a cougar prowling around the club. He used the term affectionately—Al was kind of sweet on Patty, in a big brother sort of way.”

Hmm, I know all the people in this article, and most of it seems factually accurate, but I'm still skeptical...

As we all know, cougars (the cats) are called by many different names depending on the region. Mountain lion, puma, panther, painter, catamount, etc.

So I suppose it would make sense that the alternate usage of the word would originate in a jurisdiction that also uses the word to refer to the cats themselves.

But even by that logic, the alternate usage could have originated anywhere in B.C. or Washington or Alberta or Oregon or a bunch of other places.

So now they will be out to trap and euthanize another of these beautiful cats, but they can't go and trap and euthanize the deer that are more destructive, and on a larger scale. What gives?

I think historically, deer have been less harmful, in terms of killing other mammals, than cougars.

I wonder which is more harmful, one or two cougars per year trying to eke out a meal on a nice rack or lamb, or hundreds or deer decimating farmers crops and home owners prized roses?

I think it is only a matter of time before someone is killed when a deer goes through the windshield of their vehicle.

Pretty sure Bingo is talking about property destruction. The only property I can think of that a cougar (cat) would damage/destroy regularly may be smaller pets. A deer can ruin a yard or garden fairly quickly, and can cause significant damage to cars. I see several every week driving to work, and they don't seem to be afraid of humans at all, am always watchful for them, especially going through Gordon Head. The bucks are looking good this time of year.

The kind of cougar VHF started this thread with? Now that one can cause more damage than nearly anything

  • Our officers had to dispatch a #cougar that had been spotted in the 600-block of Fernhill road in #Esquimalt across from the Esquimalt Plaza and Bullen park just before 9 this evening. The animal was originally spotted by a mom walking with her children and was located about 200 metres from Rock Heights school. Our officers contacted Conservation Officers, who indicated that tranquilizing and relocating the animal was not an option. The animal was dispatched by our officers with a single shot when safe to do so in order to protect those in the surrounding area: a sad, but necessary duty. helenedleyI'm so sorry this had to happen, but I'm glad it was over with a single shot.
