There will be a few stand-up businesses that have a spine and will challenge the ban - continue to offer plastic bags for free, and will receive overwhelming customer support in the process.

It's a ridiculous by-law, and ridiculous by-laws always get challenged.

I'm not saying I agree with the by-law, frankly government has better things to do that come up with stupid rules.  How do they plan to enforce this bylaw - hire the plastic bag bylaw police?

And how does it work on garbage day? - "sorry Sir/Maam you used plastic bags to bag your garbage so we left it at the curb"

It will be interesting to see which businesses don't abide by the bylaw.

I think they already have some sort of people that enforce existing bylaws.  Those people either patrol or respond to citizen complaints.

As for garbage day - the ban is on the provision of plastic shopping bags, not the consumer use of them.  So no, it would not be left at the curb.

People are dismissive of plastic bags getting out in the environment but look how they are blowing around in these other threads...

They are figuratively blowing around in these threads. Not literally. No need to spend taxpayer money on the former.

Priceless! Yes they do have people that are SUPPOSED to enforce bylaws. However they have had the wings clipped and been gelded by our illustrious mayor.

I quite like their house brand Turkey Jerky strips.  Great to chew on (because they are tough) while hiking.

We laugh but the City just hired folks to patrol Airbnb listings and report them to bylaw enforcement. Wouldn't at all surprise me if they did the same to find plastic bag violators. Making City hall bigger and better seems to be the game here.

So on the one hand they are clipping the wings and gelding bylaw enforcement (which must be a pegasus analogy) and on the other they are spending money contracting out reporting.

How big is Big?

I was reading (this week's VicNews) where 2% (25 employees) were placed on leave (re. covid vaccination status) of our City of Victoria employees.

Do the math, that's a scary 50 x 25 = 1,250 employees; who'd of thought?

Being more or a less a creature of habit including when it comes to shopping for groceries and with all other grocery options - including SOF, Thrifty's and Country Grocer - even closer than the closest Red Barn, which itself is quite close, I ventured into that establishment yesterday. Color me (very) impressed.

The local outlet is bright, very well laid out, features some interesting goodies specific to them, and above all from what I've tasted so far - a made to go lunch caesar chicken wrap, some ins-store buffalo popcorn chicken nuggets and RB-brand hamburger patties right off the grill last night - its all two thumb's up. And I don't promote the latter lightly either since I typically make my own home made hamburger patties from scratch. Prices are ok, a little higher than SOF, probably closer to Thrifty's as a comparison but the quality is clearly worth the extra expense IMO.

The only issue is that parking at the Esquimat location is awkward and space tight. I have more room in my bedroom closet but I suspect if you go off-peak hours its likely not an issue. T'was a bit of 'show' yesterday trying to extricate myself out without hitting something or some one but that is a minor issue and probably to be expected on a nice warm Saturday afternoon.

I’m still miffed by the $12 sandwiches that used to be $5. But you can’t beat their bacon. Mmmm

In the US we buy pre formed burgers with bacon and cheese in them that taste great right off the grill. I haven't seen any here, Thriftys, Glenwood, SOF all negative. RB maybe?

We stock red barn bacon at our little grocery store, weirdly inexpensive. I won’t tell them that tho.

Burger patties need nothing more than salt and pepper.

The sell them in the butcher display case at the thrifty’s here, not in the packaged area. Probably seasonal or even just for weekends etc.

Been shopping at bulk barn, assuming the best prices for everything, and decided to check pricing on a couple items when they changed the parking costs.

Brown sugar & deluxe mixed salted nuts; from lowest price to highest:

1 Superstore

2 Thrifty's

3 Bulk Barn

4 Save-on-Foods

The nuts were $10 per kilo more at BB than Thrifty's.

This is different from what I had assumed.

Yup; before tossing the patties onto the grill I lightly sprinkled some Red Robin burger salt onto them and after I flipped them put some smoked havarti cheese on the burgers which was an awesome complement. Didn't use any bbq sauce, usually my home made stuff, which is unusual for me. It wasn't needed the beef was that tasty.
