I opened my copy from under the Christmas tree this morning, looks like it is going to be a fun read.

We need a Saloon in Victoria, and I am not talking about that BAR down by Captial Iron that calls itself a saloon.
I mean a real saloon with wood floors, a piano player, saloon doors when you walk in , staff dressed in 1800's period clothing, and the drink menu should be as basic as it was back then.
That would be a place I would go often.

I'm not sure how much company you'd have. The Old West isn't that big a thing these days.
That said, I was given this book as a birthday gift a few months back - excellent read! One wonders how differently things might have turned out had prohibition never reared its ugly head - even today ths influence of those times is still felt in that there are very few freestanding bars - most are still connected to hotels - and nowhere near enough neighbourhood pubs.

^ Most of our readers have probably never heard of the Surfside. That's a whole other story.
Oh I had so much fun at the Surfside

I miss the Beaver because it was so not the Empress and still served singles of draft that the waitress filled up your terry cloth covered table with when she came by. It was like that until the last night in 1987, I had a t-shirt from that night for years.
I also loved the Snug at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel.
The Sub Pub was great with the long cheap wood tables, no decor and just your basic boozing.
liked the Beaver but also went to Tiffanys inside the Empress Downstairs

Your sitting in your favourite pub; what is the history of the place?
What is the very first pub and/or beer parlour you enjoyed your first beer in?
What quirky or interesting things do you remember about local pubs?
I am researching and writing about the history of local drinking establishments of Greater Victoria from the opening of the very first saloon in town (know what that was called and who owned it?) until today.
Please jump in and tell us about your favourite (or worse) experiences and/or your thoughts about the history of local watering holes.
havent seen anyone make note of the Old Purple Onion on View Street, that then became the Stardust Cabaret.......

I had completely forgotten about Tiffany's...which isn't surprising given that any time I'd have been in there I'd have probably forgotten about it by the next morning anyway.

It was the Paint Cellar before/after Tiffany’s right?

I don't remember. If before, I'd have been too young; and I don't recall what went in there - if anything - after Tiffany's.

I thought I would resurrect this thread after reading about the Bastion Pub in the Police Issues thread.
The question was brought up about the "Bastion" and where was it located. I believe it was in the basement of the Churchill Hotel. The hotel lobby faced Government Street but the Bastion's main entrance (if I remember correctly) was off of Langley Street. (down below....around the back, so to speak)
Anyone else remember going there?
I can remember the terry cloth table covers which were common in the day....and these were the perfect place to stash your pot (under the table) so it wasn't in your pocket in case of a cop sweep.
While we are on the topic of pubs and bars, I thought I would share a pic of a piece that I picked up before the pandemic. This used to hang in the hallway on the way to the can.
