^ Wow, that's some serious coin. I would bet that the good folks that championed this project are dancing in the streets.

I hope they spend our money wisely.

^ ^ No kidding, maybe they can mount all that stuff over and in the Harbour, on a moveable platform, maybe one that lifts from one end so they can get to the instruments. Maybe place that platform from one side, say by the train station, over to near the Ocean Point Hotel. For best access, have a road right over the platform, that can be accessed from both Vic West and the downtown side. When not in use by UVic, as a thank you, allow other traffic to use the top of the scientific platform.

^ Thats just the operating budget for the next 5 years. The capital outlay for what is already in the water is well over $100 million. Unfortunately, none of it is in the harbour ;)

The 2012 Campus Freedom Index has given UVic a big fat "F" grade for failing to uphold freedom of expression on campus.

In an age where the freedom of expression is a coveted right in many countries, particularly here in Canada, our nation's universities are becoming increasingly intolerant towards organized student groups that preach messages considered to be out of vogue by student unions or other campus organizations, according to the Index.

...our nation's universities are becoming increasingly intolerant towards organized student groups that preach messages considered to be out of vogue by student unions or other campus organizations, according to the Index.

What a crock of horse manure. The right-wing is so quick to moan about freedom of speech when it suits them while displaying no awareness of their own hypocrisy nor history.

The UVic Student's Society has, for decades, refused to fund clubs whose purposes are at odds with their agenda. The right always moans about being forced to "pay" for things they disagree with yet when the Student Union exercise that very same discretionary power there is a huge complaint. The UVSS is not stifling free expression of ideas it is simply saying they will not pay for it, endorse it or support it. Not really the same thing as shutting it down. The Student Union is not the University.

As for the agenda of the Student's Union, that is arrived at by democratic elections and referendums. As an organization they have determined their positions.

As for the supposed unfairness of the anti-choice posters, they are sick and disgusting images unfit for general display. Pictures that if included in a film would engender an "R" or even "X" rating are not appropriate for public display thank you very much. I have no problem with these images being subject to restrictions to prevent unintentional display.

Site preparation to begin for UVIC's CARSA Facility

http://www.uvic.ca/c...-info/index.php

Site preparation will begin the week of Feb. 25, 2013, at the intersection of Gabriola Road and McKenzie Avenue. In preparation for construction, parking lot 3 off Gabriola Road will be permanently closed. The Alumni Chip Trail through the construction zone will also be closed for the duration of the project to ensure public safety. Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to consult directional information posted at the site, and use alternate routes. Alternative nearby parking areas are lots 2, 4 and 7.

UVic seeing healthy growth in new students
By Edward Hill - Victoria News
Published: August 16, 2013 5:00 PM
Updated: August 16, 2013 5:35 PM

The University of Victoria is seeing a healthy bump in student enrolment this year, especially in the faculty of engineering.

The university has a 13 per cent increase in new full-time students for the fall semester, or about 520 people. About 4,500 students will experience the campus for the first time this September, out of more than 20,000 total in full- and part-time undergrad and graduate studies.

"This is a banner year. There's much bigger numbers this year," said Wendy Joyce, director of UVic undergraduate admissions. "We are seeing a healthy trend."

Engineering programs have the biggest increase in new students, Joyce said, up 35 per cent. Those numbers should tip that faculty to more than 1,600 students.

Camosun College's Lansdowne and Interurban campuses are on track to see an influx of at least 11,440 students in September, which is on par from last year. The vast majority are from south Vancouver Island and other parts of B.C.

"Camosun is very much a local community college," noted Joan Yates, Camosun's vice-president of community engagement.

Royal Roads University has a different ebb and flow of students than UVic and Camosun, and is expecting about 2,500 full-time equivalent students though its blended online and on-campus graduate programs and on-campus undergraduate programs.

Faculty members at the University of Victoria have voted in favour of becoming certified as a union.

Of the 711 votes cast, 448 members -- or 63 per cent --voted in favour of certification. They're expecting to be officially certified within the next few weeks.

UVic student one step closer to realizing dream of space travel

The Canadian Press Posted: Jun 15, 2014 10:40 AM PT

Justin Curran still remembers sleeping under a blanket decorated like a rocket ship when he was a child.

"It looked like the inside of a space shuttle with a joystick and all the switches and knobs," the 28-year-old recalls as he recounts his fascination with space. Planets could be seen through windows printed on the quilt-like fabric.

Canadian universities are slipping in a global ranking based on learning environment, research, innovation and other performance indicators.

Eight Canadian universities made the top 200 in the Times Higher Education ranking, and of those, only one — the University of Toronto — held its position at number 20.

Another, the University of Victoria, jumped into the top 200 at number 173.

The other Canadian universities to crack the top 200 are the University of British Columbia (32), McGill (39), McMaster (94), the University of Montreal (113), the University of Alberta (124) and the University of Ottawa (188).

It's poorly worded. They have an agreement for on-duty officers to Police on Thursday - Sunday.

Incidentally that JP has issued a few crazy (but well intentioned) rulings as of late; this one is the least objectionable. There's an appeal on, now for some other issues. I think this one is being left alone.

‘I’m not qualified’: Professor suspended after critical remarks By Cormac O’Brien

The Martlet September 12, 2016

A Computer Science professor has been suspended by the university and faces a disciplinary meeting on Monday following a confrontation between himself, the university administration, campus security, the police, and his students.

The issue began on Wednesday, Sept. 9, the first day of classes, when Jianping Pan told his students in CSC 349A that he had little to no experience with the material, was unqualified to be teaching their course, and would effectively be learning along with them.

[...]

Campus security and the Oak Bay police were then brought in to refuse other students entry and to ask Pan and the students to leave the lecture hall. “Several campus security members were definitely trying to intimidate students into leaving the room,” said one student who asked to remain anonymous. The lecture was ultimately allowed to finish, but not before most of the class had been pressured to leave. Pan was then escorted off campus.

???

WTF. Numerical Analysis. If you're a CSC prof, and can't teach that, you probably shouldn't be a CSC prof.
