Congregation Emanu-El Temple, Victoria, BC by Donald Luxton and Associates—Conservation Projects Architecture—Award of Merit

The Congregation Emanu-El was built in 1863 as a one and one-half storey brick Romanesque Style synagogue in Victoria, and is the oldest surviving synagogue in Canada, and a cherished heritage resource in the community of Victoria, British Columbia. Turning 152 years old in 2015, the historic house of worship has survived through the conservation efforts of its congregation.

I was able to speak with Mr. Luxton to gather some more detail. Work is on-going, and it would appear as though the combination of structural engineers, contractors and consultants is a good mix for the work being carried out.

Restoration work on Canada's oldest surviving synagogue wins firm architectural award

http://victoria.citi...tectural-award/

Victoria's Congregation Emanu-El Temple, the oldest surviving synagogue in Canada, has won Vancouver-based Donald Luxton and Associates a 2015 Conservation Projects Architecture Award of Merit from Canadian Architect magazine for the firm's 2013 restorative work on the 153-year-old place of worship.

Constructed in 1863, the synagogue is a one and one-half storey Romanesque structure situated at Pandora Avenue and Blanshard Street in downtown Victoria. In preparation for the building's sesquicentennial in 2013, the congregation set out approximately ten years ago to raise funds for substantial restorative work of the aging structure, which ultimately lead to the retainment of Donald Luxton and Associates to oversee the effort. James Bay heritage homes on the move: seafaring relocation will be a sight to see

http://victoria.citi...a-sight-to-see/

Two James Bay heritage homes will be relocated from the 500-block of Michigan Street to a site at Dallas Road and Dock Street as part of a heritage preservation commitment by Concert Properties and Jawl Properties.

The real-estate development duo have partnered to build Capital Park, a mixed-use office, commercial and residential project bordered by Superior, Menzies, Government and Michigan streets in Victoria's James Bay neighbourhood. The multi-phased development will include some 235,000 square feet of office space, 20,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space and up to 175 residences.

The six acre property has been the location of five relatively well preserved heritage buildings (two along Michigan Street and three along Superior Street), all of which will be retained, fully restored and repurposed by Concert and Jawl from commercial usage to residential. Two of the Superior Street homes have already been relocated to their Michigan Street sites while one awaits its final move from a temporary location at Menzies and Michigan streets. [Full article]

It seems like a strange way to move those houses.

I suppose Menzies and other James Bay streets are too narrow to just move them to Dallas Road using the roads.

Instead they are going to move them by road through town to somewhere near Rock Bay and load them onto a barge.

Then depending on the weather out through the harbour to Dallas Road where they will drag them ashore.

What is all this (important?) moving project going to cost?

^The developer is footing the bill? What should how much it's costing matter? There has to be profit in it.

The route has been confirmed. They'll be loading the barge at the foot of the parking lot between The Janion and Mermaid Wharf. The full schedule is at: http://victoria.citi...a-sight-to-see/

The early to mid-1980s. It was called Wilson Plaza or Centre at that time.

Aral Developments and the Wilson family built it around 1980, the condo/retail expansion that took over the grassy hill at View/Vancouver was around 1995.

Fleming-Review Printing was in one of those buildings and there was a large parking lot in behind.

I remember when one of those remainder-only bookstores was in that space. That would have been in the early nineties.

A cluster of three heritage buildings on Wharf Street has sold for $10.38 million.

Called the Rithet Building, the properties are all more than a century old. Work began in 1861 and additions continued to 1889.

They had been owned by Hobo Holdings of Victoria, which upgraded the buildings after buying them 10 years ago. The latest buyer was not disclosed and is from out of town, according to Colliers International’s Victoria office.

The Rithet was named after former mayor and MLA Robert P. Rithet, who was a part-owner of Albion Iron Works. He purchased the land in 1888.
