They also need to be connected to an outdoor unit by 2 copper lines charged with refrigerant at a specific pressure. Not so simple.

^Thats more or less how it is in Japan. I’m working on a new biz that will drive down heat pump prices. Stay tuned

Nice. We never put one in because of the insane cost. Our house is passiveish so it’s only a few days a year where any cooling is wanted. Maybe more in the one bedroom. Not worth $14k (ducting excluded).

No, this is an all-in-one unit, just like an in-window AC unit, but way better.  That's why it goes right through the wall, from inside to well outside.

That’s called a ductless mini split. They are cheaper.

No. Mini splits still fire refrigerant in small tubes from the outdoor unit to the indoor head.

My unit is 14” in diameter. It’s very heavy (relative to an in-window AC). It’s extremely sophisticated. But it’s cheap, relatively.

You need one for about every 200 square feet of home, roughly. So you have many. But that also helps when one breaks. You can get by with all the others until you get the replacement (delivered or you pick up).

Gonna need to see a diagram of how your new heat pump works and where the parts are located. Is it basically just a window AC unit with a different size and shape? Can it run in both directions (heating and cooling?)

Dasmo which company did you get a quote from? And for what type of equipment? There is a wide range of prices in the market.

Heat and cool, yes. It’s a real marvel of engineering. If I do say so myself.

Island energy. I can’t remember the unit but it would tie into my HRV system. If it was also my sole heating source it would have been fine but my ground level is on slab so that was radiant no matter what. Once I went there that was my heating for the whole house. So essentially it would be a cooling unit. In all these heat domes we have only had a few days where the house got to the high 20s. And we would open the windows at night.

.

The real key is the lack of moving parts. The genius is the single, very high speed shaft running the length of the unit and powering both the external and internal fan directly. It shares many characteristics of a jet engine shaft.

Is the in floor radiant heat electric or gas/boiler ? In order to get the government rebate you need to declare it’s the new primary heating source; but you don’t have to remove the existing radiant heat equipment. Feel free to message me if you want to explore how to get the right system with max rebates.

Everything is electric as there is no gas service here and my hope was to one day be able to generate some of my own electricity. But that was also way too much $$$$.

I just had a quote to replace my heat pump only, no ducts or air handler, and it was $8500.

My Hydro bill averages $55/month. I don't think I'll be installing a heat pump anytime soon.
