I say leave it just as it is. It's never going to be a nice family area. It works for outdoor concerts and events. And the fountain is handy if you decide to go swimming on the way back from the bar. (um, I've heard)

that doesn't sound like a bad idea. hows about some movable basketball hoops like at churchill square. there's enough room to play half-court

Am I the only who thinks CS would be improved if the giant evergreen at the Douglas Street side were removed

cs.jpg

and some sort of deciduous tree (or nothing at all) took its place?

I agree. This tree blocks site lines and makes the square less inviting.

Ya, that tree sucks and does nothing to improve the condition of the grass under it.

i'd be disappointed if they just cut it down but i get what you're all saying. i still think a better place for the totem poles would be along the douglas st frontage. they would work like these columns in venice, extending the plane created by the buildings on either side of the entrance to the square. or maybe they could get two more, bigger totems to face douglas st:

That could work.

The thing with the tree is that it has long overgrown the area it occupies. It crowds the limited open space at this end of the square and as David Bratzer says above, it blocks sight lines making the entire square less inviting. I strongly suggest any revitalizing plans for CS involve its removal, but I realize suggesting that a tree be cut down in this city is about as popular as boiling babies in hot oil.

i think it would fit neatly on a semi trailer. we'd just need to find a new place for it.

something else about using totem poles. afaik they're traditionally not intended to last forever, so they can be left to wear out & be replaced with new ones, appropriate to the context of a meeting place. maybe that could be a good thing, respecting the natural processes of decay & renewal. the raising of a new totem pole at centennial square would be a major event in town.

IIRC, aren't totem poles supposed to face the sea?

i didn't find anything right away about them having to face the sea, but welcome poles would usually face the sea because visitors would usually arrive by canoe.

Totem poles facing out on Douglas Street (eastward) would be oriented towards the Salish Sea (aka Georgia Strait). That's the thing about living at the southern tip of an island; almost every direction faces the ocean.

It doesn't matter where you are or which way you face, you are eventually going to wind up at an ocean.

✪ BREAKING:   City of Victoria - Local Government to waste another $56,000 on a temporary play installation.  No word yet if this is an attempt to top the stupidity of the puzzles pieces.

Up to $56,000... we can hold out hope the Jury selects a $0 dollar installation, and the whole exercise only costs us $6000.

Love the "People's Choice" where they award $1000 to the one everyone wants, but the one they are not prepared to give us.

The CoV has no business spending $50,000+ on a temporary anything. Put that money towards maintaining infrastructure which should always be the #1 priority of any municipality.
