I heard a terrible rumour the other day that Ulla was going to be closing!! Can someone please confirm this isn't true?

They've recently posted announcements for special events in October and November so I wouldn't believe the rumour. Restaurants in trouble tend to hunker down don't look ahead.

The Globe and Mail food critic was in town and wrote a review of Olo and Stage Wine Bar:

That is really unfortunate he felt that way about Ollo, I really enjoy my time and dinner when I went there with a friend.

I've been to OLO three times over the last 6 weeks. One time happened to be sitting at the bar for a snack and a couple drinks. For one they don't have gun pop so I don't see why the bartender would care if you ordered a fentimans cola. I found the guy super open about his passion for making great drinks and a pleasure to talk to.

The challenge of finding a perfect restaurant for a date is never an easy one, but one Victoria restaurant makes a list its hoped will make it a little easier.

Online restaurant reservation giant OpenTable compiled the 50 Best Restaurants for a Date in Canada using reviews by diners collected from September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019.

Closing permanently October 28th. I’d say make sure to get a reso before then but it’s probably already booked up.

what's the backstory matt?  it's successful, no?

insta:

Dear Friends,
It has been an incredible 10 years since we opened our doors as ulla restaurant. The journey has been full of joy, challenges, learning, love, tears, and growth.
As a family, we have decided it is now time for us to close our doors.
Thank you to everyone who has dined with us over the years. Thank you to the fantastic community of farmers, growers, producers, fishers, foragers, and more who have let us share their beautiful products.
Thank you to our families for being so supportive and for loving us.
And, most especially, thank you to all our wonderful staff over all these years. It feels pretty obvious to say, “We couldn’t have done it without you” - but it is so true. Thank you for being a part of our ulla/OLO family.
Our last night is Wednesday, October 28th. All available reservations are posted online (link in bio, or through our website).

Love,
Brad and Sahara

I'm guessing 10 years is the end of the lease.

And finer dining places don't do well with take out. Better food needs to be served and eaten almost immediately.

Combined with being able to have fewer number of people sitting at tables.

And winter is quiet anyway.

At least they had 10 years to amortize all the renos/furnishings. 10 years is a good run for a restaurant.

Think of places that opened only a few years ago and spent $100,000s on renos/furnishings. That would hurt.

Indeed Matt. Smart skilled operators leaving at the top of their game. Brad will be back for sure with something else.

Similar to someplace like Brasserie, I think Olo was full every night they were open, winter isn’t their slow season.

Does he still have his hands in the expanded Hey Happy operation?

You will have to convince him with good farmland. He’s been growing at Ragley farm for a while now.

He’s tight with Ableman here at Foxglove too. I told him about a nice place for sale here, he told me what the plans are and they don’t involve salt spring. :)

Matt.
