Jeez, now imagine how much "house" you can buy for $800k!

I was in Chicago recently and had a conversation with folks about condo living. Most new units in and around downtown Chicago start in the 750 sq ft range at ~$250 per sq ft. When I told them what the costs were for condos here and the size of units we often see they were beside themselves.

Yeah but if money were no object for me, I would choose a sweet condo over an SFD everytime.

And that right there is the problem. Our 3-bedroom housing stock in high density developments is often skewed towards the folks who have no problem paying $700-$900 per sq ft for a condo ...plus $500/month in strata fees. The rest of the population, coupled with age restrictions in older condos, are literally forced out of the city or into an older house somewhere in the urban core.

Yup that is the problem and with no new units being built there is nothing that will be available for generations.

Newbie to this forum. Hi folks.

Yeah, Geez. We are looking for retirement home as we are going to come here from the mainland. Native to BC, but it's been many years since I spent much time on the island.

It's a tough scrounge for urban 3 bdrm condos. We want to ditch the extra cars, yard maintenance etc and walk as much as possible for health and environment. Cycling is important. We're willing to downsize but not to a 2 bdrm 700 sq ft mini loft. Coming to YYJ, I was certain that we didn't want to live in our grandmother's house. I don't want to live in an IKEA show suite either.

I hope something may pop up, but other than finding a " golden oldie" and refurbishing/re-modelling it, I don't see much hope.

Fingers crossed.

What is your price range Chef-eth?
