it's not out of the ordinary for that to occur. It happened already on the blue bridge during a warm summer it expanded and needed to be cut and shortened

Sounds like a job for the world's toughest mohel.

Another question I have: How much margin of error is there when closing the bridge. If my car door is off by 1/4 inch it won't shut smoothly. If my house front door is off by that amount it won't shut at all.

Docking mechanisms on air fuel tankers and space stations seem to be more forgiving, you can be a few inches off target and it will still link up with the target.

Or the tugs moving a bargeload of crushed cars increase their speed while heading under the bridge just as the cotter pin holding the ring gear drops out and the span begins to descend...

Checking it out...

Something I would've done as a kid.  Access is essentially unrestricted if you walk along the railroad tracks from Tyee Rd.  They need to get this finished and open it, or should put up more fencing.  A few nights ago around 10PM someone lit a spiral firework in the center of the overpass that sent a rain of sparks down to the road.  It looked cool but probably freaked out the few cars that passed under it at the time.  I didn't have time to grab a pic, and sorry, the pics below aren't the best as they were hand held through two layers of dirty windows.

These pics, shot yesterday, also give us some human perspective on the width of the multi-use path.

That spiral fireworks should go off every time they open the bridge.

Or at least upon completion.

Wide enough for a railway track! What a shame it wasn't engineered for such. All the commuters biking in from West Hills will be happy though.

^^^Keeping the kids from climbing the old blue bridge, got to give them something mediocre to disobey.

Johnson Street Bridge costs expected to climb

The cost of the Johnson Street Bridge is expected to go up before its completion later this year, but by how much, officials are still uncertain of.

Project manager Jonathan Hugget recently told city council the cost of fendering on the north side and public realm amenities are not included in the bridge’s current $105 million budget.

Fendering is installed on both sides of the bridge to protect it from impact, should a vessel gently bounce off or graze it while coming in or leaving the Inner Harbour. While in channel fendering on the south side is already being constructed, design and cost estimates for the north side fendering could not be completed for the $1.5 million that PCL originally projected in its bid.

And in other shocking news the sun will appear to rise in the east tomorrow and water will still be wet.

Hugget believes as long as all the pieces fit together perfectly, the bridge will be open to traffic in December, as expected.

So now apparently the bridge being delivered on time is dependent on all of the pieces fitting together perfectly. Anyone taking odds on how long it will be before Hugget tells us that there were some minor fitment issues and the bridge will not be ready by December?

That spiral fireworks should go off every time they open the bridge.

And each time it successfully comes back down......

nothing works perfectly when first assembled...elevators ..escalators...all kinds of machinery they need fine tuning of course so expect more issues when its in place

^ And that will be what the Mayor says when Hugget reports back that things aren't quite perfect and the bridge is going to take a little longer than promised.

What I also can't believe is that we have known for years that the fendering wasn't budgeted properly yet nobody seems to even have a guess what it might cost to put it in place.

To be fair, there will be a plethora of opportunities to shave before the JSB is complete.

Yep like the cost going up, sending the steel back to China a few more times, painting the the bridge a reflective colour to prevent deer from invading Oak Bay, upgrading the old bridge, because the new one will delayed again....
