I find it amusing that the distance for the bridge to span is only a few hundred feet, yet it's taken 8 years and 40 million over budget to get to this point and we still don't have a finished bridge

UR, I'm not sure "amusing" is the appropriate word.

It's going to be the worst tiny bridge in the world.

Almost as bad as Sarah Palin's (remember her?) "bridge to nowhere".

Waddinxveen’s Amalia bridge  looks a lot less complicated than our bridge will be.

By my calculations the cost was 96.3 million Canadian for this bridge including the longer approaches.

Only 2 years to build, eh!

Why we built a three-lane bridge is beyond me.  Same number of lanes as 1924.

Maybe there wasn't enough rusty steel for an extra lane.

They could have just built a simple bridge like the one in Courtenay BC but Victoria residents wanted the most fancy thing money could buy instead of something functional

The lifespan of the new bridge will probably only be about 60 years

Victoria council and the Mayor wanted a fancy new bridge.

Oh so no one voted for it in the referendum?

Interesting.

That bridge is part of the local highway infrastructure. It's meant for trucks with dangerous goods, which are banned from using the main tunnel immediately beside it on the A12.

The Dutch also know how to print steel bridges.

In the center of Amsterdam is the first steel bridge in the world, 3D printed by robots. The project is an initiative of the Dutch start-up MX3D.

Heijmans carries with architectural and technical knowledge to print the bridge. The unique design of the bridge was devised by designer Joris Laarman. The bridge will be placed in 2017 on the moat of the Oudezijdsachterburgwal, the Red Light District in Amsterdam.

Oh so no one voted for it in the referendum?

Interesting.

Unfortunately, it was not really a multiple choice referendum.

The question as I recall was:

"Do you support borrowing sixty million dollars to replace the Johnson Street Bridge?

The Johnson Street Bridge (i.e. the "Blue Bridge") is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Victorians and costs local businesses hundreds of billions of dollars annually. This bridge is currently on fire and has fallen into the harbour. The bridge has personally killed trillions of cute baby seals and burned holes in the ozone layer. The only option is to immediately replace the bridge with a prototypical design, which we have been told is risky, but disregard that.

If we don't replace the bridge immediately with this risky design, our iconic harbour will be destroyed forever and every single business downtown will close. We will also all get cancer."

Too late...there is a photo of that erection in post 4711 and cyclists were lined up to be the first ones to ride over it.
