Ah, the juxtaposition of the shiny new bridge span in the background with the grimy, rusty old bridge in the foreground...

And if the City of Victoria does as good a job at maintaining this new bridge as they did maintaining the OLD bridge ... it won't be long before the new bridge looks as old and grimy as the old bridge.

Modus Operandi in Victoria is, when things that Pam doesn't like get old, the City just stops taking care of them, and hope the fall apart or rust away. Certainly no City Counciller will speak up in support of "old things" deemed no longer worthy.

Victoria only likes "heritage" when it's something City Council feels is worth keeping ... the Blue Bridge was simply "let go", because the love for it was only held by the folks that lived here, not the political wannabe's who felt a brand new bridge project would cement their legacy as local politicians.

The graffiti artists are already staking out their piece of the bridge.

The city is already trying to figure out how to string the barb wire to keep them off the ramp.   :cop:

How deep is the water and can I wear my wetsuit (assuming it still fits)?

Yes, wet suites are alright.

But wouldn't you rather just splash into the sea via VV's JSB Slip 'n' Slide?

Is that slide from your suite overlooking the new bridge? Is a swimming costume required now?

Work begins on the bridge deck...

I'll speculate that one reason for the massive barge was to provide a large stable work area for doing deck work and attaching the side spans (the MUD, and PD).

Dude, a leaky condo joke? Too soon.

Too soon? Isn't this an issue that first appeared over 20 years ago?

That irony is what makes it such a hilarious comment. It can't possibly be "too soon" to joke about an issue as stale as the leaky condo controversy.

That's why I always say "too soon" whenever you dust off your Peloponnesian War jokes.

Is it OK if I joke about the Egyptian Old Kingdom drought wars? Did you hear the one about the frugal Pharoah....?

Assembling the side span deck components that will eventually be attached to the main deck...

The winds have shifted and there's minimal haze - which makes for some sharp photographs...

This may seem a facile question, but is the whitish-grey hue of these pieces the finished colour of the bridge? I know it's what the renderings show, but do those have any relation to the end product at this point?

So the arms that are standing up on these pieces seem to have all the holes for the safety fencing already drilled. You would think that once they place the actual bridge in its spot, the other parts could be finished off quickly, while they work on testing and making sure the bridge works properly. Is that your take on those Gary?

Don't be so sure.

Word from my contact at the City is that bridge installation will be done in two phases, both using the Dynamic Beast crane barge.  Phase 1 will be just the rings and counterweight (hence the need for all that falsework),  Phase 2 will attach the span.  Some news outlets have reported that the bridge will be assembled at Point Hope and then the entire bridge will be lifted into place.  That's just not so.  I'm waiting for confirmation that the side spans will be installed on the main span prior to Phase 2 assembly (attachment to the rings).

They're still working on that drone video of the barge arrival and should be posting it soon.  Hmm, I wonder if it's going to include other footage, like some of the work done in China?

They've also put up scaffolding around the counterweight.   Another hmm, as I thought the painting on that component was completed.  Maybe it needs some touch-up work?

Some cool shots from the drone footage.  I cropped the large png file shots and re-hosted on flickr.

I have confirmation that the side spans will in fact be attached to the main deck while still on the barge.  The larger MUD (mulit-use deck) will be attached to the east side of the span relative to the barge's current orientation.  The main deck is near the edge of the west side of the barge and that is where the smaller pedestrian span will be attached.  Also, as a point of reference, the new Dynamic Beast crane barge will be even WIDER at 120' (vs. 105') but shorter in length (330' vs. 404').
