You would think that a requirement of playing in the NHL would be to have your mumps shots up to date.
That game last night probably put the playoffs out of reach.

Man, the Canucks suck. This "rebuild on the fly" has been a disaster.
Word on the street is that both Benning and Linden are on thin ice, as they should be. Benning always looks like as is asleep in interviews and Linden should just stick with his gym and real estate investments.
The team should have started to be blown up 2 years ago. Taking on and signing Loui Erikkson for 6 years was just plain stupid, in fact it was beyond stupid. So now their old guys have got to the point where they have either too much mileage (Burrows, Edler) or cost too much (the Sedin's, especially in a cap world).
They do have some nice young guys now (Sutter, Horvat, Hutton, Stecher) with others in the system (Demko, Boeser); get what you can for the aforementioned older guys + Jannik Hansen, who is arguably their most valuable asset for a Stanley Cup contender, and go from there.

According to the numbers early in the season the team sucks, and I think Willie Desjardins' number is coming up in the next few weeks.
...coming up in the next few weeks or sooner.

I think Benning and Linden are relatively safe because this while rebuild it's not a rebuild thing is because ownership demanded that the team not actually bite the bullet and rebuild properly.
Anyway, it's pretty baffling that we have a GM whose strength is apparently drafting yet we only have five draft picks this year. Terrible.

Consensus very weak draft year after the Top 5, to boot. They'll have to work awfully hard to pull any gems out of this steaming pile of mediocrity....

/\.....very true; then again the Canucks' record of abysmal drafting over the last 45 years speaks for itself....

Hey, Pavel Bure was a 6th-round draft pick.

Sure there will always be exceptions, however historically they're crap.
In no particular order their 1st round selections over the years who made little to no impact in the NHL have included:
Dale Tallon, Rick Blight, Jere Gills, Michel Petit, Jim Sandlak, Dan Woodley (scored 2 points in his NHL career), Jason Herter (never played a game in the NHL), Nathan Smith, Mike Wilson, some guy named Libor Polasek, Alex Stojanov, Kirill Koltsov and Josh Holden - to name just a few of the more outstanding draft blunders

Yeah, well drafting is allegedly a Benning strength which makes his strategy to date of jettisoning draft picks all the more confounding.

Odds of making the NHL by round (more than 100+ games played):
First round: 40-100%
Second Round: 30-40%
Third round: 14-25%
Fourth round: 13-16%
Fifth round: 10-15%
Sixth round: 8-10%
Seventh round: 12%

Consistently trading away second and third round picks, like the Canucks have over the last decade plus, has probably cost us two or three NHL caliber players. Over time, that hurts.

Could notes of correction here.
- Dale Tallon was a solid NHL player. He played in two NHL All-Star Games and had a career 0.52 PPG. That's not bad at all for a defencemen. He put up 56 points in his rookie season with the Canucks. He was no slouch.
- Rick Blight was also a solid player for the Canucks. 221 points in 326 career NHL games. Solid numbers for sure.
- Injuries got the best of Jim Sandlak. When healthy he was a dynamite two-way player.
- Jason Herter actually played one game in the NHL with the New York Islanders.
- Alex Stojanov played a massive role in the history of the Canucks, netting them Markus Naslund.
- Kirill Koltsov was a second rounder
Guys you could add to your list in place of Tallon and Blight: Mike Wilson and Patrick White

Hey, Pavel Bure was a 6th-round draft pick.
And the one that got away was Comox born Cam Neely that played for the Canucks 1983-1986, before being traded to Boston.

Got away along with another 1st rounder that turned into a great player in Glen Wesley.
I guess if you don't have your 1st round pick, you can't make a bad decision?

Got an excellent (scoring) prospect for Hansen to boot; not really a fan but Benning did well this trade deadline. Still some time left lets see if Ryan Miller or Alex Edler are still Canucks by noon PST.
