So are we in agreement, then, that ICBC is to blame for this by representing both the at-fault party and the innocent party, trying to pay out as little as possible but due to past judgements being forced to pay top-dollar amounts if individuals lawyer up?

Yup that is what I said earlier too. You can't have high claim costs and low premiums. It's fairly simple.

You also can't have the province keep borrowing billions of dollars from the fund that we all paid into, which has just been another form of taxation.

They did not borrow last year. The current situation is unrelated really.

I already own three motorbikes, how many does ICBC want me to own?

How come the NDP is going to get rid of MSP premiums then? We should be doubling our premiums and paying user fees.

The NDP says they will get rid of MSP premiums. It's a good idea, just roll it into income taxes.

MSP premiums are fixed, they do not vary based on your claims record.

100% I agree those that can afford it should pay medical user fees.

You think the 1.2 billion$ the Liberals stole (sorry, borrowed) since 2010 is unrelated to the overall financial health of ICBC?

I guess if you think they would have just kept that in contingency, then I guess ya, that might have bought them a couple years.  But insurance is easy, it's premiums in, claims out.  You need to balance that out sooner or later.

You could have different insurers representing the two parties but at the end of the day either settlements would be down or premiums up. I have experience in the two party model and have had to hire a lawyer to even get the "low ball" offer

What people seem to be avoiding talking about because it is politically sensitive is the fraud that is in the system.

There's no way the ICBC model of having thousand and thousands of Autoplan brokers in brick and mortar retail locations is cheap or the most efficient way to go. Why doesn't ICBC insurance renew automatically? Why can't I purchase insurance or register my vehicles online? What year are we in?

They will counter with something like it's a great and inexpensive way for ICBC/driver licensing to check for fraud since they have to see the person, see their driver's license yada yada yada...   Hey, that's all fine for brand new drivers/insurers, but for your typical 50-year-old driver that maintains the same address and the same insurance pattern for 15 years...

I doubt it's inexpensive. I bet it's very expensive.

In other places, you can renew your vehicle registration online, through the mail or at a 3rd party partner.

In BC, you can purchase home and tenant insurance online and on the phone, and those insure much more expensive assets than cars and motorcycles! You can purchase optional vehicle insurance in BC online.

Vehicle insurance is dead simple. It's much less complicated and expensive than a home insurance policy. We are stuck in this weird archaic bizzarro ICBC world in BC. The average British Columbian can't even see the alternatives as they are so used to our oddball system.

I've noticed a few Alberta registered cars in my neighbourhood now pushing well over 2 years here in BC, still registered to Alberta, presumably pretending to be living in Alberta and paying cheap rates. ICBC requires a 30 days to register in BC, so in addition to their coverage being dubious, we are probably subsidising them in our rates. Now that I've noticed, I see non-touristy looking out of province registries all over Victoria.. I suppose not a lot can be done, but I can't stand cheaters.

Maybe they are students,  I vaguely recall they are exempt.

I have only been to the ER, walk-in, and doctor a few times in the past ten years. I eat healthy, exercise four times a week, and meditate.

I'm absolutely fine with paying MSP every month because the money helps those who are less fortunate. There will be a day when I require additional assistance and I hope the younger generation helps me out. Not everyone starts out life with a good hand. Some people start out life great, take a wrong turn, and need help finding their way in life again. Socialism and capitalism can work together.

What I do hate is having to charge my credit card every month for MSP payments. Between the 10th and 21st-ish, I receive a brown envelope stating I owe MSP money by the 24th. Going online, typing in my account information, finding my credit card, and re-checking the information is annoying. Why can't they bundle MSP into my taxes?

As for ICBC, my opinion is the exact opposite. Knock on wood, I have never been at fault in an accident. Why are my premiums going up? I understand the difference between a merge and a yield sign. Going the speed limit versus twenty km over isn't worth the effort in my opinion. I know how to shoulder check, use my rear view mirrors, and stay the appropriate distance from another vehicle. My monthly rates should be dropping, not rising.

If you get sick then I'll help you out.

If you suck at driving then I'll gladly hand you the bill.

Most of these are probably students. I see a lot of out of province plates at UVic. Students and military are exempt (though they have to get a permit).

Can't you put MSP premiums on "autopay" each month? And online billing.

So in light of the recent massive deficit news, pain and suffering payouts will be capped started next year.

http://thechronicleh...ave-1b-annually

Good start.

Next up, bad drivers (drivers with at fault accident history and multiple MVA violations in a period) should pay considerably more for insurance, IMO.
