not sure if this was shared anywhere on here

Nanaimo has taken a step towards potentially hosting a Western Hockey League franchise.

The City has completed an initial study looking into the building of an event centre with up to 8,300 seats depending on the event

Things usually don't work out for Nanaimo, but they still dream big. And that's refreshing for Vancouver Island.

The Royals game will be a sell-out tonight.

Home playoff games Tue/Wed March 28 and 29.

And Nanaimo's (population 104,000) BCHL team is threatening to leave for Campbell River (pop.36,000) in search of bigger crowds.

Going to Nanaimo 6 times a year really highlights for me how bad it can be if your city totally sucks at urban planning.  The city is really a disaster of pockets of development/retail here and there with vast distances between them.  I'd actually suggest that downtown Courtenay seems more like a downtown than anything Nanaimo has for a "downtown".

So they may have a population much higher than other WHL or BCHL towns but it doesn't really matter if it's all spread out.

So little 5'6" Matthew Phillips has scored 50 goals this season and is the new single season record holder for goals scored.

The Royals will take on the number three team in the WHL and top team in the Western Conference, the Everett Silvertips, in their 1-vs-8 Western Conference Quarter-final best-of-seven series. Home games are next Tuesday and Wednesday, with a possible game six afternoon game on April 2.

It's a tough road for the Royals, who have lost 7 games in a row, and just came off a two-loss weekend against the same Everett squad to finish the regular season. If they can get by Everett, they'll be up against either Seattle or Tri-City in the second round. The good news? No chance they play Kelowna until at least the Conference Final.

1 - Royals @ Silvertips | Friday, March 24 at 7:35 pm | XFINITY Arena - Everett, WA
2 - Royals @ Silvertips | Saturday, March 25 at 7:05 pm | XFINITY Arena - Everett, WA
3 - Royals vs. Silvertips | Tuesday, March 28 at 7:05 pm | Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena - Victoria, BC
4 - Royals vs. Silvertips | Wednesday, March 29 at 7:05 pm | Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena - Victoria, BC
5 - Royals @ Silvertips | Friday, March 31 at 7:35 pm | XFINITY Arena - Everett, WA
6 - Royals vs. Silvertips | Sunday, April 2 at 2:05 pm | Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena - Victoria, BC
7 - Royals @ Silvertips | Tuesday, April 4 at 7:05 pm | XFINITY Arena - Everett, WA

Great game last night to even the series at 2-2. Does anyone know if the Friday away game will be aired at any local pub?

Royals are in 4OT in their mus-win 6th game right now.  Game has been going for more than 5 hours.

Perhaps even crazier is that over at Archie Browning at the same time, the Victoria Cougars (Jr B) were involved in a 4OT game.

So between two junior hockey games in Victoria on Sunday afternoon, 15 periods of hockey were played.

The Royals are without a head coach as Dave Lowry has been named an assistant with the Los Angeles Kings.

The LA Kings have named Dave Lowry as an Assistant Coach, Kings Vice President and General Manager Rob Blake and Kings Head Coach John Stevens announced today.

...

Before the Royals, Lowry spent close to a decade with the Calgary Flames organization in a number of different capacities. For three seasons (2009-12), he was an assistant coach with the Flames.

Not a surprise, he hinted at such during the post playoffs interviews. Big loss for the Royals. Dave was consistently able to take average talent and turn it into a much better team.

6-0 to start the season. This might be our year.

Five of those six games are against pretty weak competition, but the team looks really good (and the sixth was against Kelowna). Also the average margin of victory is about four goals. Already highly ranked in the CHL ratings. Could be a fun year!

I think 6 was vs. an 0-6 Kamloops.  But in any event, we got 2 20-year-olds (a forward and an offensive d-man) back from the pros for last night's game and they both scored.

Mid week games at home this coming week.

After their hot start in which they're averaging 6 goals per game, the Royals are now the number one ranked team in the CHL. I think this is the first time ever they've been number one.

Tonight is the teddy bear toss.  Usually a pretty good event, and a nice turnout.

Calling all high school and post-secondary students: What’s better than a hockey night out?

A FREE hockey night out to watch the Victoria Royals face off against the Prince George Cougars!

Let off some steam after that grueling finals season by cheering on your home team on December 27th and 28th at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

Great game tonight. The Royals didn't take the lead until the 17 minute mark of the third period despite being outshot. Little bit of dust up after the buzzer. Barn was almost full.
