Frank Stanford's comment Thursday July 17, 2014

I hope, but I have very little confidence,  that all the die hard vocal fans of Esquimalt-Nanaimo rail actually plan to use it, every day, when service starts up again, as it apparently will next spring.

The taxpayer will never recover anywhere near what he's investing in this project, in the name of wishful thinking.

I am reminded this week of yet another hidden cost...the trans Malahat commuter bus service that B-C Transit has tried so hard to build these past several years.

The annual report from Transit yesterday says 86 thousand passengers rode the service last year...up 7.3 per cent from the previous year.  They're delighted with that increase...but it's still not breaking even, at 7 dollars a ride.  A train, with operating costs many times higher, will charge passengers more, will lose more money than Transit, and will still bleed some portion of business away from the bus.  Everybody loses...particularly the taxpayer, who subsidizes both competing operations.

........

I had never seen Frank Stanford and so for years I thought he was in his mid-70's, from his manner and voice.

Imagine my surprise when I had CHEK news on one morning and actually saw him.

Oh, maybe it's not CHEK, whatever TV station that CFAX broadcasts on until 9AM. Right before Corner Gas comes on.

That's channel 12.

#15 is going to go to Esquimalt now.

No idea where Esquimalt Avenue is.

Effective September 2, 2014 New routing on #15 UVic/Esquimalt. This route will now carry through in to Esquimalt via Esquimalt Avenue. Passengers wishing to continue on to Royal Oak will now transfer downtown to the new Route 6 Royal Oak. Click here for a complete map of the updated #15

I don't get it. Is the 6 no longer going to run into Esquimalt?

Effective September 2, 2014 Route 6 passengers will need to transfer downtown to the Route 15 to continue to Esquimalt. Service on both routes will be frequent throughout the day to minimize wait times between buses. This change improves destination choices for Esquimalt residents who will now be on a route that provides access to UVic, Camosun-Lansdowne and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Follow this link for a complete map of the updated route. (view 74.7k PDF)

So Route #6 will now terminate downtown.

So right now, #6 comes into town via Yates, to its major stop on Yates St. between Douglas and Broad.  So I guess it'll terminate there now?

Yes. If one wants to continue onto Esquimalt one will need to transfer to the #15.

OK.  And how does #15 go from downtown to Esq?  Yates, to Government, to Pandora, and over the bridge?

It sounds like the #15 will follow the old #23 Esquimalt route that ran before the #6 was extended into Esquimalt.

I still don't understand why it's called the 15x. Will the route be express?

It'll still be express from downtow to UVic, yes.  not in Esq.

This make sense to me, I've never understood a natural connection between Esquimalt and Royal Oak.

So here we have more confusion. If it's only express for half of its route, why call it the 15x? See this is what I don't get. BC Transit in Victoria has absolutely no system whatsoever for route numbers. They're all completely meaningless together with the ABC nonsense some routes have.

Why does Esquimalt need two busses that endat UVIC? The 10 already goes to Royal Jubilee. Something else is in the works here.

Well, I always maintained that high Quadra and Esq. Rd. do not likely both need the same frequency.

I wonder if the #6 will run more, or less frequent when the new schedule comes in?
