It seems to me that Molson Stadium should be in the corporately named category. If Molson is no longer paying anything, they benefit from the exposure.

What really should happen is Bell. That way you'd have False Creek surrounded by the Telus World of Sciene, Rogers Arena, and Bell Stadium.

Full name is Stade Percival-Molson or Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, and it's a McGill University facility, no affiliation with the beer brand. Percival was a student athlete who died in WW1. The Alouettes are sponsored by Budweiser.

They've never paid for the rights. The stadium is named after Percival Molson.

Seriously though, the BC Libs confusingly backed out of a deal with Telus worth $35-40M. That was odd. Would be weird if the Whitecaps field was known as Bell Pitch at Telus Place.

Apparently, alcohol and tobacco companies are ineligible.

Whoever ends up as the sponsor, I imagine the naming will still include "BC Place." Just like how we have "Science World at Telus World of Science." Thankfully, "Telusphere" was soundly rejected by the public!

B.C. Place will need sprucing up before playing host to the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup and a request for bids to hire a construction manager to oversee the work offers a hint at how extensive those requirements will be.

 

The B.C. Pavilion Corp. (PavCo), the Crown corporation that operates the publicly owned stadium, has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to hire a consultant for the work, notwithstanding its $514 million renovation in 2011, which satisfied hosting duties for the 2015 Women’s World Cup final, among other major events.

The province, in 2022, estimated it would cost $240 million to $260 million for Vancouver to hold at least five games as a co-host of preliminary-round games during the 2026 Cup, being jointly hosted between Canada the U.S. and Mexico. At that time, there was a $40-million estimate for “venues,” without a breakdown of how much was to be spent on practice venues versus B.C. Place.

 

However, one of the RFP requirements for a manager is that they have overseen at least one project worth more than $50 million within the last five years.

 

Tourism Minister Lana Popham was also not made available for an interview Thursday, but an unattributed written response to questions from ministry staff said the province “has not signed any contracts required by FIFA relating to organizing, staging and operating 2026 World Cup matches.”

 

A selling point of the North America bid for the 2026 event was that no new stadiums would have to be built because games would be played in the existing facilities in 16 host cities including B.C. Place, BMO Field in Toronto, Lumen Field in Seattle, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

 

BMO Field in Toronto faces a more dramatic facelift for the event with the addition of 17,756 new seats, raising its capacity to 45,736. A total cost hasn’t been revealed, but the City of Toronto faced criticism for directly awarding a $4.2 million contract to architectural firm Gensler Architecture & Design Inc. for work on the job.

BC Place’s future

 

 

Speaking of the stadium, it’s now older than 40. Which makes it a senior citizen from the era of multiplexes. The second oldest, behind Mexico City’s 1966-opened Azteca, on the FIFA 26 roster.

 

The NDP’s new housing development laws include instant upzoning to densify areas around SkyTrain stations. In 2018, Vancouver city council approved in-principle a mixed-use tower outside the stadium’s southeast corner, but B.C. Pavilion Corporation has not sold the land. Just like it has not sold the stadium’s name to a sponsor.

 

Could the stadium be in play after 2026? It was assessed last year at $222.9 million ($167.5 million for the building and $55.4 million for the land underneath) – a 13.7 percent year-over-year increase. 

 

If the Lions and Whitecaps need a new home in the long-term, could one be built just a punt away from their original stomping grounds?

 

At Hastings Racecourse, which dates back to 1892, the thoroughbred owners pine for modern facilities. But they remain in an uneasy marriage with track’s leaseholder, Great Canadian Entertainment.

 

The casino is not the bonanza originally promised and slots players have glitzier options at the Grand Villa in Burnaby and Parq in downtown Vancouver.

Mayor Ken Sim’s 2022 campaign included a photo op in the Hastings grandstand. But not to discuss the ponies. He’s in favour of expanding SkyTrain under or over Hastings Street and onward to North Vancouver.
