Notice the Difference? New Canadian Internet Copyright Rules for ISPs Set to Launch

The longstanding debate over how Internet providers should respond to allegations of copyright infringement by their subscribers was resolved in Canada several years ago with the adoption of a “notice and notice” system. Unlike countries that require content takedowns without court oversight or even contemplate cutting off subscriber Internet access, the Canadian approach, which has operated informally for over a decade but will kick in as the law in 2015, seeks to balance the interests of copyright holders, the privacy rights of Internet users, and the legal obligations of Internet providers.

The result is a system that has proven effective in raising public awareness about copyright, while safeguarding the identities of Internet subscribers, providing legal certainty to Internet providers, and leaving potential legal actions to the courts.

I received a notice from my internet provider that included a letter from Warner Bros in Hollywood that put me on notice that I was in "possible" possession of an electronic file that I might have "possibly" downloaded from the internet.....of which they "claimed" to posses ownership of.

My internet provider suggested that I install password protection on my wifi router. :)

Who hasn't gotten one or two of those?

Love the response from your ISP!

I haven't received one in years and years.  Probably almost 10 years ago now.   Then again I've also drastically reduced the amount of downloading I do.  Used to torrent everything, now I can't be bothered.  Mostly netflix, and occasionally we rent something from iTunes...  About the only thing I still download is Top Gear because I don't have a legal and convenient way of acquiring it.

Not only that, the music has changed drastically once the UK episodes are finally available through legal channels in Canada.

I used to rent a fair number of DVDs and Blu-rays when Blockbuster was around, now I mostly use Netflix and rent the occasional movie on iTunes.

I used to use Napster and such back in the day, but now that iTunes music is DRM free and I'm not restricted to specific playback devices I buy all my music now.  I'd buy more movies if they were more affordable and less restricted to specific playback devices.
