...In construction, it is far better (for the developer) to find that the site for an excavation is  filled with bedrock rather than clay...

The Legato and St. Andrew's sites are perfect examples of how large clay deposits can really slow construction.

Its got nothing to do with speed its all about money. Drilling Blasting rock is slow as well it took very long at Legato and at 1515 Douglas

It really affects the financial bottom line to deal with clay ..adds a huge cost to the projects far more than bedrock

It's got nothing to do with speed it's all about money.

Of course, but the longer it takes to get a development out of the ground the costlier it becomes. Time is money.

No clay is a massive expense to a developer.

Time is already factored into the cost . they almost always have a timeline

It can take just as long to drill and blast a site to clear it from rock as it does to excavate clay

I always wondered about the Era. They drove dozens of piles into that mushy, sloppy soil. Took months.

At least with the bedrock sites, the blasted rock can often be trucked to VMD on Bay Street for crushing for little/no cost, or even a small credit. Very few people want the clay, particularly the blue/grey clay currently exposed in the base of the St. Andrews site. You will pay $$ to truck that away and dump it.

You have it bang on.

The rock is sold .

The clay has a dump charge attached to it.

The money made by selling the rock offsets the cost of removing it whereas the  cost of removing clay has no return and costs them money and a lot of it

I always wondered about the Era. They drove dozens of piles into that mushy, sloppy soil. Took months.

Those piles are driven to the base of the clay layer onto bedrock.

An auger is then inserted over and over to remove the clay from the pile

A drill is then sent down and it drills into the bedrock at the same diameter as the pile.

The pile is then pushed into the bedrock as an anchor.

Water is pumped out of the Pile.

the Pile is them filled with concrete.

The building with then be anchored to the bedrock when built on top of the piles

The ERA had bedrock at 60ft then a few metres away it was 8 feet very wavy profile there.

Do they perform the blasting differently when they need to remove bedrock that the next buildings foundation rests upon?

I could see bedrock in an image to the far east side of the dig.

They take what they can with dynamite but when it get close they may finish of with a Hoe Ram attached to an excavator.

The following video shows how it can be done skip to 3:40 and generally, in developed countries they dont let kids stand on the excavators while its working like what is seen in this video

Hoe Ram would be a good name for a rock band.

Would anyone know how the site excavation looks at present?  Has more bedrock turned up?

Did they sell anything at the unveiling on Saturday?

Would you figure they reached the final depth of the excavation now?

Nice photos of the dig.

except for the fog or vaseline on the lens

What is your interest in this project Glen? Just interested or want to be an excavator operator? Or are you planning on living there when complete?

Things are coming along with the excavation. The  remaining should be all removed by today or tomorrow. That leaves rock. More blasting and rock removal. A ramp will then be constructed sometime next week for access to the excavation. Blast rock will be used in construction of ramp. Part of the excavation on the Fort st side is at grade now.

Just looked at your updated images and video of the B&W site.  Interesting as always and well done.
