One aspect at RR that did surprise me were the straws which were plastic; we don't dine out so frequently that I can swear to it but those places we've been at least since covid all provided paper straws - I thought that was required for some reason. Anyone know for certain....Matt?

Thankfully, I have been encountering more plastic and fewer of those nasty paper straws recently.

Had nothing to do with covid.  It was one turtle with a straw in its nose that lead us to this.  Luckily the tide is turning back somewhat.  Because all paper straws are ridiculous.

It’s across the border in Saanich.

Could that be it?

Know it all.

No.  Vancouver has a straw ban, no others.

No, not yet. Single use plastic ban is coming federally though I think.

It’s possible the straws were PLA, and not petro based. Paper straws are the worst, PLA is almost indistinguishable but are more brittle.

Quite likely PLA and not traditional plastic.

I don't care what they are made out of as long as they don't dissolve in my beverage.

Same. One place here makes great milkshakes, but paper straw? Just give me a spoon instead.

PLA and CPLA technology has improved a lot over the last five years. Too bad it costs so much more.

Could have worded it better, you misunderstood my meaning; I wasn't inferring a possible plastic ban since or as a result of covid but rather our dining out experiences since roughly from the emergence of the pandemic.....better? :). Interesting I hadn't heard about the turtle story; and yes the paper straws are far from ideal. Like putting a piece of chalk in your mouth...

Yes, that’s my issue too. They seem to function fine, I suppose as long as you don’t nurse your drink for 45 minutes. But the thing clinging to my luscious lips is a bad feeling.

Odd  Burger has a location:

The Company is also pleased to announce that it has secured a location in Victoria, British Columbia and will be drafting permits for approval by the city.  The franchised location is set to open at 1700 Blanshard Street and is approximately 1,300 square feet with a large patio.

Sounds like the ground floor of one of the Hudson buildings.

Founded in Ontario in 2014, Odd Burger is one of the world’s first vegan fast-food chains. It offers a menu of burgers, salads, wraps, desserts, and shakes.

The brand has been teasing new locations around Canada for a while now, and it actually just provided a general update with some seriously impressive numbers and plans.

It's a bit odd that the closest pub/restaurant to the arena is?  I have no idea, but nothing is even close.

White Spot and Romeo's used to be close. Szechuan on Caledonia is probably closest now.

Is the brewpub in Hudson Walk still something that might happen?

They haven’t posted on Instagram in a year now. Not sure it’s happening.

I have stockpiled a large quantity of plastic straws for home use as well as a stock pile of single use picnic stuff.

Can't recall the name but isn't there a small hole in the wall, very highly regarded chicken place just around the block and down Quadra, behind the VicPD, the VCC and the arena parking lot, across from the Crystal Pool? Its totally unassuming yet every time I'm in a vehicle with someone driving by it they comment on how great the chicken place is. Korean maybe? NParker might know....

I’d put my money on no it won’t happen. Brew equipment arrived, slab was cored then it stopped. They would need 3 mil or so to build out. Can’t see that happening on Frontfunder….
