^ Facts.  That'll upset the ecomentalists.

What makes me laugh is that nobody even knew the Trans Mountain pipeline existed five years ago!

Most people are painfully unaware of the realities of the world around them. Most do not know there is a large refinery in Burnaby, for instance, or that there are several huge refineries in northwest Washington or that petroleum fuels are barged over to Vancouver Island everyday or that we transport a massive amount of dangerous substances by rail every single day.

Or that there is a 13km jet-fuel pipeline being built at the airport.  Tankers coming into the Fraser river to fuel up planes!

And they also do not know there is already a 40km Kinder Morgan pipeline through Vancouver, from Burnaby to the airport carrying jet fuel today.

Some of the stuff that travels by rail down the Fraser Canyon and through the Rockies makes bitumen look like child's play.

Jet fuel line is through New West and Richmond, and there's quite a bit of opposition to the new pipeline locally, because of the tankers. What most people don't know is that right now YVR is trucking jet fuel up from Washington through the Massey Tunnel!

It looks as though the opposition is resigned to the new plan.

I guess the advantage of the tanker system, rather than a pipeline upgrade to Burnaby, or a pipeline to Cherry Point, is the ability to source different suppliers than the one they have now for pipeline fuel.

Anybody have an estimate on how many tankers come to the Island each day?  Nearly 800,000 people... cars, trucks for gasoline and deisel, heating fuel, a few airports that need fuel, industrial uses.

^ As far as I know there are no fuel tankers to the island, just barges and ferries

Sorry, I was not clear.  How many truck tankers would come over on those barges and ferries each day?

The fuel is loaded onto barges, like this one, and then delivered to a fuel depot, like the one up by Cobble Hill. The truck tankers don't move across the water. The truck tankers fill up at the fuel depot and then go around to the various gas stations.

It would appear they have at least one 8-tank 27,000 barrel oil barge. Where's the outrage? It's just a matter of when that spills, not if, right?

Shhhhh, the eco justice warriors are pretty much oblivious to how their smoke spewing 1974 VWs operate.

The whole country is criss-crossed by pipeline, many are well over 50 years old. People would be very surprised if they looked at a map of pipelines.

Right, we had a barges run aground in Enterprise Channel near Oak Bay, a couple of barges on the beach at Dallas Road, one in Esquimalt Harbour...all within the last eight years.

The pipe that carried water from Elk Lake to the Quadra Street pumping station( now the Keg) and on to the City of Victoria.

Much of the Islands fuel comes in through Bear Point in Chemainus.  The old BC Hydro generating station was removed and sold off to Shell.  Used to be all of the jet fuel for the island came through Bear Point....not sure any more.

Bare Point, I think.  Still a tank farm there.

So Elizabeth May is an oil refinery fan. Who'd have guessed that?

Surely this must be a different Elizabeth May. Not the MP representing Saanich. Probably some neocon MLA from Saskatchewan.
