Great find! That whole sign needs to be uncovered before some moron repaints it.

This thread should contain all the "ghost sign" pictures we've found. A subset of the larger signs/billboards thread, this one could contain only recently discovered vintage signs.

Done. This will now be the "Old and Historic" signs of Victoria. The other thread on signs, billboards and electronic advertising will be reserved for new/recent installations only.

Know it all.

This is Vancouver, not Victoria but it's the gold standard of "ghost signs". Located at Granville and Robson, not only was it recently uncovered, it was only meant to be temporary--the rarest of the rare.

Vancouver Sun, with more photos.

The sign reappeared during the demolition of the three-storey Farmer building at 801 Granville. The Farmer building was constructed in 1922, so the Lloyd sign would have been covered up almost immediately after it was painted, and hidden for nine decades.

^Great shot, and the gull approves, too.

I thought Spencer's was always on Government Street.

I'd love to see those buildings restored.

Before that false facade teh Odd Fellows Hall has beautiful windows as well as a large balcony facing the Street. During mayday Parades and other events the front of the building was covered in decorations and Swag
the photos I have seen of it are hard to look at because the place has been destroyed and violated with plaster.

There are a lot of interesting views of building from up high that we have no idea about. Buildings that look like square boxes sometimes are not.

In 1890 this address was listed as 104 Johnson St
The Building now houses Aveda but it was one a Butcher Shop owned by Richard Porter.

The newspaper clipping is from the TC 1984

The Ghost sign appears to be not painted on but made of different coloured bricks and seeing that the family were involved in brick manufacturing they could very well have made the sign this was instead of with paint.

This is one of my favorite ghost signs in Victoria. There are many more that are hidden and even more that have been painted over. I'm going to go onto this roof sometime and see if it in fact is made of lighter coloured bricks

The sign says R Porter Wholesale and Retail.

^Please fix those Flickr links!

Here is a great find from Randy Smart on Facebook. He claims it's the inside of the streetcar powerhouse building in Rock Bay.

This 1939 tourist map of Victoria is making the rounds on the internet:

You can zoom in at the website. It's in great shape.
