Glad to see this thing finally take shape. I did some soils work on this site back in about 2005, thought at the time construction was imminent. Only off by a little over 10 years.....

Will the Encore crane be erected within the next month as well?
Posted 11 March 2016 - 08:43 AM
Oh no, that will take quite a while. Depending on how long excavation takes I would imagine it won't be erected until some time in the summer.

This Time Lapse Video was shot over 2 days and included about 6000 photographs shot 5 secs apart from each other.
I had asked Chard Developments, Kinetic Construction and Farmer Construction if it were possible to mount a camera near the top of the RKM 270 ton mobile crane which was going to be used for erecting the tower crane.
After some discussions I got the go ahead and started making plans.
The lift was started on March 8 when the tower sections and crown were going to be lifted into place.
The following day the Jib, the counter jib, counter weights and operator's cab were to be lifted.
March 9 started off with winds that were too high and the lifts for that day were cancelled .
March 10 the weather was suitable and the final sections were lifted into place.
The editing which includes removing segments of photos where nothing is going on. Parts of the video are sped up slightly while other parts are slowed down
Without the cooperation of Chard, Farmer, Kinetic, and RKM this video would not be possible so I would like to publicly thank them all.
Gary took a photo of the crane from his place , Ive put a red arrow on it showing where I placed my camera. The camera has a 3mm lens which pics up about a 170 ° fov . It was attached securely to the lattice part of the 270 but I also attached a safety line on it. The bracket was left on the crane for 3 days so that the perspective did not change. i only removed the camera each day to recharge it. Batteries are good for about 6 1/2 hours.when fully charged.

Condo-quality rentals coming to 800-block of Yates Street
http://victoria.citi...f-yates-street/
Dave Chard of Chard Development is nearing the construction start of his most ambitious Victoria project to-date, a 15-storey, 209-unit purpose-built rental at 819 Yates.
Considered the City of Victoria’s most prolific condo developer, Chard is breaking from protocol to deliver a much-needed product in a region under-supplied by new-build rentals.
"There is growing demand for purpose-built condo-quality rentals in downtown Victoria, and 819 Yates is positioned to meet that demand," Chard said.
Crews have been excavating the former surface parking lot between the 800-blocks of Yates and View streets since September in preparation for construction. Last week a crane was erected on-site signalling the nearing end of excavation and the arrival of builders — something Chard says can’t happen fast enough. [Full article]

I never realized the buildings directly to the east of 819 Yates were going to be razed as part of this project. That is going to come as quite a shock to the folks at St. Vincent de Paul.

Wow I really like the bold courtyard east of this building. Too bad SvdP and half the Wave and 840 View will have to be knocked down...

Too much wall and not enough window. If a large building (especially a widescraper) has a lot of glass coverage then the sheer amount of reflection can partially make up for the obstruction. Reflections can change dramatically from day to day and even throughout the same day. You're not seeing the sky directly but you're still seeing it, which is a lot better than nothing. For the location this building is not bad but it should have been better.

Earlier proposals for this site were better; this one got "Victorianized" to become the widescraper this city seems to favour.
