That is a nice looking addition to the Victoria city-scape and once again makes me wonder at the naysayers of this or for that matter the NJ project across the street: on the one hand you can choose a crumbling and falling down POS property sitting on a prime waterfront location and sitting there like a cancer in virtual perpetuity (how long was Janion sitting there rotting away...40+ years?), or you can opt for a well thought out and dare I say innovative rehabilitation/design on the other. This is a no brainer in Calgary or Vancouver but seemingly like pulling teeth in little Olde Englande-by-the-Sea.

Speaking of N-J the Reliance folks should get a medal if they some how miraculously get city approval for that proposed *monstrosity* of a tower. You know Pam & Co must be frothing at the thought of a twelve-storey "skyscraper" at that location......

Looks like the top portion of the Janion facade has been refinished.  Can't wait until the scaffolding is down!

The bottom 2 or 3 floors facing the Bridge are going to a nice view.....of the side and underside of the bridge.

Wonder how the price will be compared to something else that actually has something interesting to look at .

^ first picture ever of the David Foster path under the bridge.  I hope there's enough room to bike/walk around the sleepers.

Now that all the scaffolding is down from the south wall of the original Janion, I thought i'd give readers an idea of how the micro condos fit into the space. Interesting to note that some units will have the balcony while others will only have two windows.

Incidently, these smaller units range is size from 24.1 sq. meters to 26.3 sq. meters (260 sq. feet to 283 sq. feet)

The latest on the Janion...

A few things of interest.  They're now working on the roof.  The floor re-shore is still in place (those red rods), although now only at the outer edges of the lower floors.  Still, I remember Promontory had a floor's re-shore removed much sooner.  I'm thinking this may be because the Janion floors are thinner than Promontory's since they do not have exhaust ductwork within the floor slabs.  There may be enough flex at the outer slab edges that re-shore is needed as a placeholder until the window frames are installed.

You can see it in HB's shot above, but I've included another shot of the stone seawall facade progress - looks good.

Building Squatted in Victoria

October 23rd 2006 5:00pm

A building was squatted in downtown Victoria in solidarity with the APC squat and to demand that the regional governments and provincial governments build social housing. The Victoria riot squad shot tear gas into the building and arrested former APC member and Victory Squat resident Craig.

VICTORIA'S HOMELESS SQUAT JANION BUILDING DEMAND EMERGENCY & LONG-TERM HOUSING FOR ALL

Monday, October 23, 2006

VICTORIA, BC--A dozen homeless people and supporters have occupied the Janion Building in downtown Victoria, BC, a three-storey building at the corner of Store and Pandora streets that has been vacant for nearly two decades.

"We have opened this building to provide emergency housing," participants said in a statement. Homelessness is an emergency that is growing worse. The City, Province, Feds and police have not responded to Victoria's growing homelessness crisis. So we have taken action ourselves."

The Ad-Hoc Committee to End Homelessness has mobilized in defense of the Store Street Squat. Consisting of church members, trade unionists, community activists, and other concerned citizens, the Committee is encouraging Victoria residents to visit the squat immediately to prevent police from evicting the inhabitants of Victoria's newest emergency shelter.

The participants in the squat have begun renovations in the derelict building, with drills, saws, hammers, and 2X4s to make it livable for the winter.

"This building has remained vacant long enough," one participant said. "It is now open to provide the housing that decision-makers have refused to provide."

One person's squat is another person's trespassing.

Very nice. I honestly never thought I would see this building renovated. I guess we can thank our very expensive bridge for the revitalization of this zone.
